As he was recognisably a Postie, it was likely the damage to Royal Mail's reputation that was the misconduct. In Royal Mail's 2019 "Our Business Standards An Employee's Guide" it states, "Behaviour Behaviour which damages service to customers, our reputation or efficiency is unacceptable"

I suppose. I'm not sure why it should be a postman's job to help the elderly, though, it's not as if they're police or ambulance. Are they trainedin first aid? What happens if he'd tried and dropped the woman - would Royal Mail be liable for any further injuries? Would he?
Did he not phone for help?
I wouldn't have, ladybirder, I haven't got a phone. He should have done better, but I don't know that failure to help people ought to be a sacking offence.
Jno , he should have called for an ambulance or at least alerted the immediate neighbours
He could have made an effort to assist the lady, tired or not, he should have helped her, I'm sure he could have made a call to get her help, they all have mobile phones on them.
Come on, Jno! Houses close together. He chose not to knock on the door of a neighbour and left the lady there for god knows how long?

Sacking him is right.
Good.
What a scumbag.
he is probably glad to get sacked with the state of Royal Mail
only jno could make an excuse for such a savage!
^ Who said he had to pick her up ?? What happened to common decency, i.e. going to a neighbour for help or calling an ambulance or even asking for her permission to go into her house to get something warm to put over he in the cold ?? Nobody with an ounce of compassion is their being would have just walked away and left her there !! So glad he has been sacked.
answer my questions then, TTT. If he'd dropped her, who would get the blame? If she'd sued him, do you think Royal Mail should or would have paid? Or would they just have said "Nothing to do with us, he wasn't doing his job, he was acting off his own bat"?
ladybirder - he didn't do anything at all.
Bizarre
Sometimes you can't believe what you're reading on here.

Firstly, I am glad they have made this decision.

We are all humans, is it not our instinct to help or at least get help for someone in distress.
I'm not saying he was a lovely person, mamyalynne, just that refusing to act as an emergency service should not be a sacking offence.
jno, as others have said he doesn't have to do it himself, he could do any number if things rather than burger off and leave her on the deck. Your wriggling here tells me what a piece of work you are.

Perhaps, apart from any medical personnel or the police, it is nobody's job. However, this excuse of a human did not alert anyone to the woman's plight and for that his employer has said he did not show the highest standards expected of Royal Mail employees.

Would he expect anyone else to be bothered to help him in his hour of need?

Thank goodness for the neighbour's camera.
Picking her up wasn’t the only way he had to help her, Jno. He had many options.
could well be, gness, but if I found anyone I knew had been sacked for not being helpful to a stranger, I'd say the same thing.

Thank goodness for all the times that posties and milk men/women have come to the aid of vulnerable people on their rounds.
