Licking their wounds? Maybe voters are just as fed up with their constant sniping at the government yet not offering a viable solution to current problems.

Where are the Tories this morning? Oh, another party at No. 10 to drown their sorrows.
Had that by election been in dare I say a “red wall” seat it would have gone resoundingly labour.
Labour voters voted tactically here. I know that may seem hard to grasp.
Labour may have come second here last time but really there is no “second” in a seat with a 23,000 majority.
Boris Johnson is finished but he may cling on for a while
Well I dont think you can get more true blue than me and I think this is a disaster for Johnson and by association the Tory Party.

Yes its a protest vote, but the 1922 ignore this at their peril. Its not a minor swing its an ultra safe seat gone. I would imagine there are a fair few back benchers starting to get twitchy now, N o10's response trying to plaster over this unmitigating disaster of a result will only compound the problems.

If Johnson had any decency left in him he would go now, but I wouldn't expect it from a man who lies, twist turns and probably has more kids than a Jeremy Kyle guest (And they probably know the mothers and the proper number too).
Labour didn't want to waste money contesting the seat; they never expected to win. The only thing that will worry them is if it leads the Tories to dump Boris.

It is not the job of oppositions to show governments how to do things.

I doubt there will be any sorrow, this was expected and will be welcomed by a fair few outside the metropolitan bubble. And the Tories still have a massive majority so its of little consequence in that direction.
Not much difference between the Tory groupies on AB to Trumps supporters. IMO.

I couldn't disagree more. The opposition should be holding the Government to account and that means having viable alternatives rather than just refer to them as 'Scum' etc.
And the SNP groupies Anne? They seem to just as blinded too.
Danny, it's indicative of the state both parties are in right now. If things continue as they are, the Lib Dems could well be looking at vastly increased numbers voting for them once the general election comes in a few years time. Obviously not enough to get into office, but enough to significantly close the gap on the other two useless messes.
Now they want to introduce SNP , desperate measures. :- What about that Green Party ? Lol,
Danny @11.26,

Labour didn't expect to win and they hardly bothered Campaigning there
...The Cons didn't expect to lose and they did Campaign there.
The Cons did right by keeping Boris of the Campaign trail.
But they were wrong to put a candidate up who is Based in Birmingham.
..,,,,,,,,,Salopians and Brummies......Red flag to a Bull.....
...... Didn't do their homework did they.

11.23 You should have left it Grey,
.....To match the mood of the Con Supporters on A/B this morning....

You seem to know an awful lot about the Midlands for one who doesn't live in the UK, Gully.
ymb, the time for an opposition to present its viable alternatives is before a general election, so the public know what they're voting for - not before a by-election. Other times, it's perfectly reasonable to just point out what the government's doing wrong.
funny how gulliver's berated because he doesn't live in the UK (Khandro isn't) and I'm berated because I do.
I still disagree. How can you point out what the Government is doing wrong if you dont have a policy you would like to follow yourself. Its no use just attacking the other side you need to present your argument backed up with alternatives (And that applies to all Parties).

Otherwise the Government of the day will just say you are slagging off - and they would be correct.
Neither of them continually bash the UK though.
If Patterson had accepted the result of an independent inquiry, and accepted a few days suspended, then he didn’t have to resign and this election needn’t have happened.

All self inflicted.
oppositions oppose. They're not there to help. If they want to win elections, they have to tell the public why, but that's the only time they need to do it.

Just as governments are supposed to govern. If they do it badly, anyone can try slagging them off. But if they do it badly before elections, they lose their jobs.
12.53 I also know that the Brits don't like the French'
....and the French dont like the Brits.... and I don't live in France..either.
