The fault here was with the judge. Before he sent the jury out to deliberate he pointed out the right to protest and questioned whether jailing them was necessary, which then planted the not guilty seed in the jury members heads. They deserved two weeks in jail or a hefty fine for the disruption they caused.

Like it or not, that the judge's job. He has to put to the jury the choices they have and the facts they must find in order to arrive at their decision. If he had failed to do so and the defendants had been convicted they would have had strong grounds for appeal.

PP, I think it goes without saying, that there have certainly been times where people "need" to protest. Democracy doesn't listen to everyone equally (or it would mean minorities are always wrong).
That doesn't mean it is ok to destroy whatever you want to, but... is the law saying, that acts that are part of a "peaceful protest" are lawful... or not?
