It's not about intelligence - or even a University Education (which, believe me, is nothing to do with intelligence anyway).
Nor is it about context (however much people might wish parrot that as a defence of the indefensible).
It's about basic human decency and empathy - which Carr (and his mate Gervais) seem to be so patently lacking in.
Their sad attempts at humour revolve around humiliation of the weak and sniggering with the strong (how often have you cringed as one of these two apologies for comedians mocks a person who is weaker and less articulate than they are).
It's not cancel culture to say that Carr has overstepped every bound of normal decency and should suffer the consequences.

I totally disagree, dave... as you probably noticed :-)
It doesn't matter who personally likes it, or finds it funny- it isn't serious.
I actually missed the whole Whoopi Goldberg thing, except a few online mentions. But- was she actually trying to be serious?
We just can't cancel everyone that someone somewhere finds offensive.

... and to dispose of the "second-hand outrage" comments that will be along shortly, I actually have Netflix and watched the relevant part of the show in detail - if Carr is hoping for a 'contextual escape clause' then he's going to have to spin some quite abstruse interpretations onto quite straightforwardly offensive verbiage.
Looking through the "blue tick glitterati" on Twitter, it's dispiriting how few have even been able to bring themselves to disown the joke, let alone the man - one or two are conspicuous by their silence when they would have been melting their keyboards if the 'joke' had targeted Jews rather than Gypsis.

Gness, I could pretty much say that any comedian could offend someone somewhere. I don't take it personally, I watch those I like, and those I don't, I leave to others. It's literally harmless.
There have been some... where I have both felt offended, and also laughed. Maybe a dark sense of humour. But, each to their own.

Carr's been saying something that isn't widely acknowledged: the holocaust wasn't just about eliminating Jews. Roma were victims too. So were gays and the disabled. By assuming Jews were the only victims we do rather dishonour all the others.
Did everyone actually know Roma were victims before he mentioned it?
