LadyG I hope your comment about the shark is a poor attempt at humour. The shark was in its own environment and doing what comes naturally. Feel sorry for the man but as an experienced person he should have been aware of the dangers of being in the sea in that area.

Pathetic attempt at stirring Canary. I'm not, nor have I ever been a dog owner, I'm definitely a cat man, but I wouldn't like to see any animal killed without good reason. Sadly in this case, the reason was clear and obvious to all.

I haven't heard any outrage on here william, I think the majority agree that it was right to kill this dog ! However, after saying that, there IS often a need for outrage when the dog haters condemn dogs purely because they are just that, dog haters !!

I totally agree with your comments about the shark lankeela, it was where it was supposed to be and I don't see the need to kill it. This doesn't mean that I don't feel heartily sorry for the poor man it killed and his family, because I do.

"Unconditional love" goes both ways. You can't mistreat a dog all their life, put them in the wrong environment and expect them to stay sane- any more than you would with anyone else.

Unfortunately, this was obviously the only answer in this situation.

Lankeela, I was being deadly serious about my shark comments. If the shark has attacked before it is likely to do so again and therefore poses a serious threat to human life. Again, I hope they find it and destroy it.

The poor man who was killed by the shark was not posing a threat, he was simply in the water doing what he loved.

Who is trying to teach the other sharks a lesson? Sharks rarely attack humans. When a shark does attack a human, it is a rogue shark that poses a threat to human life and this particular shark ventured into waters where great whites are seldom seen. This is about this particular shark and not all sharks in general.

Who will it be next? A marine conservationist just doing their job? A child snorkelling? A lifeguard trying to help someone in difficulty?

It is a dangerous predator willing to hunt humans and must be destroyed.

It’s not ‘rogue’, LCG. Some species of shark, especially young ones - the great white included, are known to attack humans. When I dive I am always very aware that I am intruding into a world that isn’t mine.

It has been known in the past but remains extremely rare. It is said that sharks don't like the taste of humans due to their iron-rich blood, but I don't know how true that is.

Sharks who venture into waters such as those in which that poor man was killed are rogue sharks in that they behave atypically and in this case the shark poses a serious and continued threat to human life.

Do you suggest we ask the shark nicely to clear off?

I suggest people swim in safe areas … ironically the man who was killed was opposed to shark nets and other means of keeping areas of the ocean safe for humans. Venture into a lion’s cage and you’re liable to get hurt. That’s a simple fact of life … but you can’t blame the lion for seeing you as dinner. That’s what predatory wild animals do.
