How are people vetted in order to be approved to house these people. I worry that some of the attractive young Ukrainian mothers with children I have seen pop up on the news, who are desperate could become targeted by men who might look to take advantage of them by offering them a home.

A generosity of idealistic spirit is commendable but, realistically, it isn't workable. I don’t think we can treat all refugees the same. We don’t have the facilities to do that. We have to prioritise and at the moment the plight of the Ukrainian people is by far the most urgent …. in my opinion.

common sense on AB ? - righto! as another commentator is given to er commentating
// I don’t think we can treat all refugees the same. //
well thank god for that, we aren't
all the ones in Calais will testify ( have complained loudly and largely unheard) about that one

I was reflecting - as Afghanis fled liberation, 200 were blown up and killed
and in Przemyl hundreds of thousands piled onto trains which pulled out of station to Poland ( OK pulled in: P is IN Poland) - and no one got blown up (yet)

so THEY are behaving differently and so are we.

also the majority are educated, can get jobs here and pay taxes.....
They will go back to the Ukraine and their menfolk and help build it up again
I doubt elderly people and young mums and kids will add much to our economy and the men won't want to come here. They will want to stick with their EU benefits!

pat; //I doubt elderly people and young mums and kids will add much to our economy and the men won't want to come here. They will want to stick with their EU benefits!//

But Ukraine isn't a member of the EU.
Hi Naomi

But is it the most urgent because it's do close to us and they share much the same culture?
I am not suggesting we welcome all refugees here. Far from it.But entry rules and regulations re vetting should be the same for all imo.

//Those young men arriving on boats from France are not refugees, they are economic migrants trying to get here illegally, a world of difference from those families trying to get to escape war torn Ukraine.//

Quite so. But alas the latter take up the same amount of accommodation and need the same amount of support and public services as the former, regardless of their point of origin. The reason we have no facilities is that successive governments have seen fit to accommodate all the chancers that have arrived here illegally and seem to want to do nothing about the problem. As a result we're full up.
