Boris Johnson To Address Verkhovna Rada Today

I hope that if it's in the actual parliamentary building that it will be safe (for the MPs that is, as BJ will of course not be there is person)
Mind you reccent strikes by the Russians haven't been that accurate.
On the point made by Layla Moran at the bottom of the link, better late than never.
I am full of admiration for BJ over Ukraine: it would not stop me voting for someone else on Thursday, though, although I accept that others may view it differently. I'm not sure her political point is in great taste.

But this is now starting to sound like grandstanding, especially if the rumours are true he will be using Churchill style phrases.
There are real problems in this country, caused in part by him and his green wifes net zero. The same policies that have enabled, and still do, Putin across Europe.
Johnson needs to remember, Ukrainians do not vote for him.
Help them but cut the World stage rhetoric Johnson

It's odd, but on the radio earlier they were interviewing a girl from Lviv called Ol'ha who had returned to the city after initially fleeing the country.
She explained how happy she was to see her boyfriend again, and at the end said she just wanted to say something she had meant to the last time she was interviewed.
I thought she was going to announce she was expecting (!) but she wanted to say that she loved Boris Johnson (not like that I think :-) )
I wondered what how the BBC interviewer would react, and there was me, a left-of centre, very pro-BBC person, with some mischievous delight, anticipating the ensuing awkwardness!
The thing is, I'm normally BJ's biggest critic, but some things matter more on the "world stage" than our hang ups about our politicians, and as far as I am concerned, as long as he is around, BJ can grandstand as much as he likes as there are some people for whom it really means something,

8.40 Youngmafbog. Well well well you are now saying the same thing that I've been saying for weeks now about Boris cutting out the rhetoric, and every time I've said it you disagreed with me.
Get on with the job of supplying arms and keep your gob shut Boris, is what I've been saying.
Putin just can't wait to press that button and discover what the real destruction looks like.
Boris's gob has made Britain Putin's number one target. Just keep mouthing off Boris.

Well well well Sandra, you have got it wrong.
You have been saying he should shut up because you think it escalates things and you sometimes seem to want to appease Russia.
Well I dont. I have no problem with him saying those things.
What I am saying is he needs to be very careful because speaking in Churchillian manners to another Parliament about war is tantamount to grandstanding. Big difference to what you keep banging on about.
//as there are some people for whom it really means something,//
Yes, but these are not his voters. Many of his voters are being driven to live on the bones of their backside. Fuel and food poverty is set to be a very real thing for many more over the coming months.
Fine, do your bit for Ukraine, but remember you are also responsible for 60m people in this country too Johnson. Neglecting them or ignoring their plight, which is what he seems to be doing, is not acceptable.

Well I don't know if the PM is ignoring the voters - I hope not but maybe he is - , but i would say to sandra that words matter. Churchill's speeches rallied the nation in times of war and while I don't wish to compare Johnson TOO closely to his hero (and subject of his biography) the effect should not be underestimated.
It is, actually, important, that the enemy knows our position without of course giving up any actual secrets.

"Boris's gob has made Britain Putin's number one target. "
I think you will find that Ukraine is actually the No 1 target.
It's just as well tho you probably don't watch Russian TV.
The latest bloodcurdling rhetoric from Vladimir Solovyey postulates a nuclear strike on GB which would engulf the entire island in a 500 meter wave, and leave a "radio active wasteland" - which at the very least is highly dubious physics.
If we are going to run at the first sign of that sort of nonense then we may as well all sign ourselves over now.

11.09 Yeah yeah whatever. Speaking in Churchillian manners is exactly what I've been saying all along. You need to review the past posts.
And why is he doing it? to save his own scrawny neck at home, and to do that he his putting this country in a very grave position. Boris don't even know the difference when it comes to following simple rules that he made or forgot. So being a leader on a war footing is very concerning.
We have all lived in our confy bubbles for decades now with the illusion that nothing will ever happen. Even the Ukrainians didn't believe there would be a full sale invasion. A false sense of security for years if you like.
Putin don't need troops tanks and planes to put the UK to bed.
I say again, supply what we can and keep the gobbing out of it.

I find it rather bilious that Johnson is using the terrible situation in Ukraine for nothing more than his own ends.
It’s almost as sycophantic as the tweet that Dorries copied last week.
He really ought to be ck cent rating on local elections this week but I think he already knows the game will be up shortly when the next few fines are levied and the Gray report is finally published in full.

That is what you think.
Maybe you are right.
But my point is that by doing what he does he is helping, because even if some people here don't like it, many to whom it is directed draw strength from it.
And don't forget he is also announcing millions more in aid for Ukraine, which is not necessarily a vote winner.
Seems some of us are trying to have it both ways: accusing him one moment of making the UK a target (curious when you think that there was enough nerve agent in that phial in Salisbury a few years back to kill thousands: so there's nothing new there), while at the same time making himself very popular.

Perception is everything. And on the ground (certainly amongst 'white van man' traders I mix with) what is being perceived is that he is doing this for his own ends and *** the plebs. It would be so easy for him to cover both ends, but he wont. Few sound bites to the UK (then promptly doesn't do what he says) then back to the World stage. I personally have no issue with the World stage. For me it is good to see the UK right up there in front standing for the World and freedom.
He really doesnt help himself.

ich: 10:13, well said, if only the rabid Boris haters would give him occasional credit for this sort of thing.
I guess it’s difficult when you look at how much time he’s spent with Russian oligarchs in the past, had holidays in their villas and ignored the advice of the Security Services in getting his very good friend, the son of the former head of the KGB, into the House of Lords.
As I said, just a guess.

On a point of information, Alexander Lebedev was never the head of the KGB, but a KGB officer.
I don't wish to stand up for the man, but there are a thousands of people in Russia employed by the security services. It's just that sort of place.
And Evgeny I don't happen to believe is the worst Russian in the world.

I don't think that Boris is doing this for his own ends. He is one ,if not the only one, of the world leaders who speaks several languages fluently. He spoke a few weeks ago to the Russian people in Russian and also Ukrainian. I am sure that was a lot more helpful in getting the message across than addressing them in English . At least give him some credit where it's due. I'd rather have a 'bumbling person'like Boris than an evil, ruthless killer like Putin.
