in the 1999 mid term elections Labour lost 1239 seats and 32 councils

2022 Toryies have lost around 500 seats and 11 councils.
which of those 2 years would you consider to be a "drubbing"? It speaks volumes that still Labour can barely lay a glove on the Tories, even mid term post crises. Labour are the ones that should be considering a new path.

You're right There was no drubbing. The limp lettuce leaf that is Starmer is useless. You say that Labour should consider a new path and, again, think you're right. But really can't see where Labour can go from here. Heading to the Left would be mad (Corbyn) and they can't move to the Centre, ground that is supposedly occupied by Starmer. Or the 1996 local elections, John Major PM

Labour +468
Tory -607

We know what happened at the 1997 General Election.
Mid term elections have no bearing whatsoever on General Elections.
Question Author
Yes and Blair still won after the 1999 mid term disaster. The point is that mid term local elections are completely irrelevant to subsequent GE results.
Question Author
bang on danny, BA.
2010 when Gordon Brown lost the General election, local elections were on the same day.

Labour +417
Tory -121

We can plat this game of plucking past results and proving nothing - all day ;-)
I worked at a polling station for local elections and you wouldn't believe the number of people who said they were voting to get rid of Maggie Thatcher! No matter how many times you tell them some people just cannot grasp how it works......
The only way forward is a new (so-called Progressive), Left, an arrangement between Labour, the SNP, Lib-Dems, the Greens...But it won't work (ask the Lib-Dems about the result of their co-operation with the Tories).
12.22 Gromit "We all know what happened at the 1997 General Election" . Is that the election that TTT insists was won by a Ghost ?.
Question Author
Gromit: "2010 when Gordon Brown lost the General election, local elections were on the same day. " - that's not mid term then is it?... and he lost because by then people were sick of New Labour.
Question Author
Paigntonian, good answer. BA.
I think they need to split off the loony left element. I can see Starmer is a decent bloke and I think a good half of the party are sensible and decent. They should form a new centre ground party and would probably attract a some of Lib Non Dems and Tories into it. They need a new name and a new fresh approach, A bit like what Blair did but I'd drop the name Labour completely if I was them. People just don't trust Labour historically and I can't see that ever changing. They also need to win Scotland back and a new party may just appeal to the Scots.
TTT @12.46 "Then people were sick of New Labour.
....................Now people are sick of New Conservative.

Oh dear danny!
Question Author
TBF I'll extend Rodders the same attitude to beer gate as I did to party gate. Forget it, irrelevant. Not a resigning issue but he may feel it is because he's been calling on the PM to resign for the same issue so I can understand his thinking but no it's not a resigning issue.
Are you an 'Indian giver', TTT? You give BA to Danny, then you give it to Paigntonian.
Question Author
apologies to danny, I didn't realise I'd already given it out. I owe you a BA danny.
Ken, no sweat, I'm not short of a BA or two.
I don't think he'll miss one, TTT, he has quite a collection:-)
Question Author
yeah but they are mostly crosswords etc, how many real ones have you got?
Crossword BA's aren't real? Try some of the cryptic crosswords sometime.
