Sad, no great age really. Loved him in Minder, Sweeny and New Tricks.
RIP Dennis.
Just read this, loved him in New Tricks. RIP Dennis
I remember him as William when he was 14 and watched him grow up on TV.
Thanks for the years of entertainment, Dennis
Sad news indeed, I don't recall not enjoying anything he was in.

RIP Dennis.
Weirdly, i was regaling my daughter of the time myself and a friend 'bumped' into Denis Waterman and John Thaw in a bar in London. They were taking a break (liquid lunch, perhaps) from filming The Sweeney.

R.I.P. Dennis
Meant to say i was telling daughter f the meeting just this afternoon. That's why it was kind of wierd.
Aww, that is sad news. No age..
RIP, Dennis.
Oh dear. So young, thought he was great in New Tricks and I loved the theme song he wrote for it. R.I.P..
It was impossible to dislike him. Had a few problems because he could be a bit uproarious, but hey. Proper bloke gone. R.I.P Dennis.
"New Tricks and I loved the theme song he wrote for it"

Mike Moran wrote that, though Dennis did the vocals.
Ahhh, that’s sad.
Very sad and quite young too, RIP Dennis

I was allowed to watch The Sweeney as a child but can only remember the theme tunes. I liked the closing version best. My dad loved Minder.
I worked in Maida Vale for a time and would often have lunch with a couple of colleagues in the "Warrington" pub in Warrington Crescent. This is a large ornately decorated Victorian pub with rooms above and it has a wide staircase leading from the bar are to the upper floors:

It wasn't quite so sumptuous then as it is now, but still a fine pub nonetheless.

On one occasion we arrived to find John Thaw, Dennis Waterman, a couple of other thespians and a film crew holding court at one end of the bar. They were discussing the morning's filming which had taken place in the pub. "I don't care! I don't care!" Dennis Waterman was heard to shout to the assembled throng. "I'm not falling down those *** stairs again! I've done it three times this morning and you'll have to go with what you've got."

We were at the bar just getting them in and roared with laughter at Dennis's refusal to do any further stunts. We were "ordered" by him to make sure we watched the episode after he'd put in so much effort and he bought the three of us drinks to help us comply. We had a brief chat whilst expressing our thanks but they didn't linger too long, explaining they had to move on to another location for more filming in the afternoon.

This is the episode:

Reagan is supposed to be keeping watch on a gang who had broken in to the bank next door to the pub using the pub's cellar to gain access (though in reality there is no pub next to the Warrington). But he gets diverted as the flat from which he is doing the obbo belongs to an old flame and observing the gang seems to take second place.

RIP Dennis. Great actor.
Favourite Sweeny episode? "Messenger of the Gods" (Series 4 Episode 1). Lukey Sparrow (Played by the late Malcolm McFee from "Please Sir") is pulled in by Regan on suspicion of robbery. But Lukey is due to marry Linda Rix the following day and Jack incurs the wrath of Linda's mother - played by Diana Dors.
favorite regan-carter exchange (can't remember which episode)

after a particularly physical encounter with some blaggers, Carter remarks to Regan "hey guv, your nose is bleeding". "yes George" replies Regan, "it must be the altitude"......
It is strange how some deaths get to me more than others and this is one such example. I also thoroughly enjoyed the gentle comedy series he was in "On the up" with the wonderful Joan Simms (just the one Mrs Wembley) and Sam Kelly. Quite simply non-pareil. I have the boxed set and it is still enjoyable. In fact I have always enjoyed anything DW was in. Togo summed him up - a proper bloke.
This really shocked me and made me sad when I heard earlier. No age at all these days. A fabulous actor and a pretty good singer too x
Top bloke.

RIP Dennis.
RIP Pete(!)
As Nadim Zahawi tweeted earlier!
In fairness, he didn’t delete it
