JK Rowling has condemned as 'utterly shameful' the treatment of pupil, 18, who claims she was hounded out of her private school after challenging the 'trans ideology' of the visiting speaker, a female member of the House of Lords described as a 'well known activist'. The pupil, 18, told The Times: 'The language she was using was implying critical theory took precedence over biological reality in defining women.'

When the student returned to the sixth form she was surrounded by up to 60 girls who screamed, swore and spat at her, leading to her being unable to breathe properly and collapsing, it is claimed.

Teachers supported the teenager at first but abandoned her after other pupils accused her of transphobia, according to the report. She returned to school on several occasions but was told she would be sent to work in the library if she said anything provocative in lessons, and was repeatedly bullied.

She eventually left in September.

Rowling waded into the row today, tweeting: 'Utterly shameful. Add this to the tottering pile of evidence that people in education and academia who're supposed to have a duty of care towards the young have succumbed to an outbreak of quasi-religious fanaticism. The girl's crime? Saying ''sex exists''.

1-59 is "up to" 60, naomi. It's a rather less than exact figure.

What on earth are you going on about, Jno? They haven’t claimed an exact figure probably because they don’t know how many were involved. It’s not difficult, however, to imagine a bit of a crowd gathering in a situation like that. Never seen a school fight? It’s what happens.
Its about time this nonsence stopped.

We saw it with Brexit and covid too, anyone not subscribing to the right view was called swivel eyed, a loon or an anti vaxer (even if they had had the vaccination).

Liberals are bullies, we need more like JKR & Musk to stand up to them. Hopefully Musk taking control of Twitter will shut down one of their channels of hate. They will have to listen to other opinions and wont be allowed to have people removed shut out by algorithms.
Question Author
YMB, I said something along those lines the other day. ‘Liberals’ aren’t liberal at all. They’re frighteningly controlling. It’s their way or no way.

//it's like religious zealots of the past labelling anyone who doesn't hold the correct view as heretics.//

I know this feeling because I don't believe in man-made global warming. I think it's natural. I've given good reasons for that but had my replies on here deleted by a mod who clearly thought I was a heretic because I didn't agree with him/her. Say what yer like and yer out, is the message!
Question Author
Spot on, clarion. You’re silenced for saying what someone else perceives to be the wrong thing - and that shouldn't be acceptable in anyone’s book - but it is.
I’ve mentioned this before, but a couple of years ago on this site I referred to what was very clearly a man, and who had all the man bits but was identifying as woman, as a man, and the AB Editor posted and said to me (paraphrasing) “she, Deskdiary - it’s not that difficult”

I thought then, and I still think, it was bang out of order. Fundamentally the Ed was telling me how I should think.
Question Author
I remember that, DD and I told her ‘no can do’ - and I never have. A bloke is a ‘him’ and I won’t lie to suit anyone.
DD; the Ed wasn't telling you how to think. Just how to express yourself on this site. It's not your site and it's not for you to try to make the rules in other people's realms. I am regularly told 'how to think' by other posters here, but I don't play the victim and make an issue of it. Do you have an issue with rubbing along with people and giving a bit of courtesy to people you disagree with?
Why this obession with sex and labels? We're all human beings and surely we are grown-up enough to rub along without picking fights at any opportunity?
Question Author
Ask the people who decide there are 50 plus ‘genders’ and invent the labels to suit.
Very noble Atheist, but I cannot refer to somebody who is very very clearly a man as Her or She because (a) it's absurd and (b) it's not true.

We're in the absurd situation where women giving birth are referred to as 'him' and 'the father', and where a 'woman' was arrested for masturbating with 'her' penis in public. Both have been in the press in the past year or so.

Surely you can see the absurdity?
//Just how to express yourself on this site.//

But it's not that at all, is it? This site, like many others, elicits a wide range of opinions. However, a man calling himself a woman and insisting on being referred to as "she" is not a matter of opinion. It's a distortion of the truth, expecting participants in a conversation to indulge in fantasy, to accept fiction as fact. If there is any lack of respect it is failing to accept that some people do not like to be told they must accept fiction as fact and indulge in this fantasy. Men can call themselves women if they wish; they can call themselves a horse but they won't be allowed to enter the Derby. Being male or female is not a matter of opinion; it is a matter of fact. I don't really know what is more troubling: individuals and organisations trying to suppress people from expressing an opinion (however unpalatable) or them trying to suppress people from expressing a matter of fact (however irrefutable).
What puzzles me (as an ex planning officer) is that I don't see the demonstrable harm to interests of acknowleged importance. Why does it matter to some people that other people might ask to be addressed in a certain way? The Queen asks to be addressed as 'Your Majesty', Johnson asks to be addressed as 'Right Honorable'. Richard Cole asks to be addressed as 'Reverend'. NJ presumably asked to be addressed as 'Your Honour.'
Does any of this really matter enough to get angry about?
Your examples are false equivalences Atheist.

Let’s take it one step further - Bristol University is recognising Catgender!

You take it to its (il)logical conclusion, and I can identify as a chair.
//The Queen asks to be addressed as 'Your Majesty', Johnson asks to be addressed as 'Right Honorable'. Richard Cole asks to be ... blah blah yawn.... Is this compulsory?
Also, what JK Rowling thinks is neither here nor there. There's no point making a big deal of whether she agrees or disagrees with anyone else. But her opinion is the whole DM story, of course.
//Does any of this really matter enough to get angry about?//

The examples you cite (which are honorary or professional titles) are not relevant here. But it’s not simply a matter of how people prefer to be addressed. If it was it would be no big deal, though I would resist going along with the fantasy that a man calling himself a woman really is a woman simply because he says so. But it goes far deeper than that. People really are being asked to accept fiction as fact – and it’s dangerous. I’ve related this story before but make no apologies for doing so again because it’s vital to emphasise just where this lunacy is leading.

A while ago a woman who was a patient in a female hospital ward was raped by a man pretending to be a woman and who was being treated in the same ward. Bad enough you may think, but it gets worse – far worse. NHS policy dictates that its staff must consider patients to be of the gender they identify as with no regard for their biological sex. The police enquiries were severely hampered because of this. They were told, categorically, that there were no men present on the ward at the relevant time. It took them almost a year to get to the bottom of that fiction and they met considerable resistance from senior NHS managers in their efforts to get to the truth. In the meantime the victim had suffered considerable anguish and verged on a mental breakdown. She effectively suffered “gaslighting”, so strong was the fiction portrayed.

The NHS policy (known as “Annex B” – I don’t know what it’s an annexe to) means that hospital trusts inform ward sisters and nurses that ”… if there is a male, as a trans person, in a female ward, and a female patient or anyone complains, they must be told that it is not true - there is no male there,”. This Kafkaesque instruction is the stuff if nightmares and is just one example of the serious problems this utter lunacy can lead to. But overarching all this is the intimidation that “heretics” (like me) can be subject to. It is preposterous that an organisation such as the NHS has a policy that compels its staff to withhold evidence from the police or provide false statements to them when they are investigating a very serious crime. Nobody should have to acquiesce to that. As I said, men (or women) can identify themselves however they like but they should not expect others to indulge in their fantasy. There needs to be a general push back against this nonsense.
So basically a man was in ward of women, and said man raped a woman, but it wasn’t a man because he said he was a woman, and the NHS perpetuated the farce?

And we’re meant to go along with this.

It is entirely absurd.
> The police enquiries were severely hampered because of this. They were told, categorically, that there were no men present on the ward at the relevant time.

Are the police really so inept that it took them a year to figure that out? Did they go to the Nursie school of biology?
