I think the answer to the Stargazer question is simple. The Metropolitan Police have spent a vast amount of cash thoroughly investigating this matter BUT have applied buckets of common sense to the result.
I suspect Durham Constabulary are doing much the same for the Starmer beergate debacle and will also apply common sense to their result. Starmer and Rayner will get a FPT each. End of game.
What they choose to do personally thereafter is up to them. Boris won't resign and neither should they.. Dear God it's a fixed penalty ticket not rape.
bang on paul, the voice of reason.
If it's determined that Johnson has mislead Parliament, he'll need to go.
You’re missing one glaring fact, Paul.
Keir Starmer has already said he will resign if given a fine. That’s out of a sense of duty and honour I’d imagine?
He’s never denied being there and despite this will still resign if sanctioned by the Police.
The Prime Minister has been sketchy about the details every time he’s been questioned.
We went from no party to yes, there was a party but all guidelines were followed to several parties with over 120 fines issued.
Each time the Prime Minister has been a mixture of denial, puzzlement, selective memory loss or used sloping shoulders and let responsibility fall into his juniors and entourage.
Like any Police investigation it usually relies on the forensics to provide the telling evidence.
It seems the emails and pictures surrounding all this will show the Prime Minister to be an outright liar who has misled parliament about it too. His actions recently have only exacerbated matters further. His line all along has been to wait for the Sue Gray report.
What made him decide he needed to arrange a clandestine meeting very recently with the supposed impartial author of the report?
Are these the actions of an honourable man with nothing to hide?
You can spin it in as many directions as you like, his interference in the imminently pending report look questionable and highly suspicious.
The fact that some in the pictures released have been fined but not the Prime Minister on this occasion now make it look like the Metropolitan Police are in reality the Keystone Cops or have certainly been influenced in some way. That is almost certainly how the public will see it and the media will ask a lot more questions about the Prime Minister’s conduct and demeanour throughout.
One thing is certain, Margaret Thatcher would not have allowed a person like Boris Johnson anywhere near a Cabinet position when she was Prime Minister.
Like or loathe her, she had a sense of honour, duty and integrity and was a decent Prime Minister who carried and lived up to the gravitas of that office. She’d spin in her grave at the actions and behaviour of the current resident of Number 10.
The Government's own advertising (propaganda?) while they were having these parties looked like this:

what, the left can't comprehend is that neither of the "gates" are resigning issues. I've said about a dozen times on here that no one should resign over such trivia. The problem is that Rodders has dug himself a hole by continually calling on the PM to go, so now he's painted himself into a corner and will probably end up going. If he'd not been so gleefully calling for the PM to go over nothing, he'd be safe himself. Note that Boris hasn't called for Rodders to resign. Who's using their loaf then? Oops, looks like another Labour leader down the Khasi.
One more thing though Paul.
You’ve said that the Metropolitan Police have spent a vast amount of cash on this investigation, brought about because the Prime Minister is believed to be untrustworthy.
Estimates range from £460-490,000 pounds for the investigation.
It will probably prove to be money well spent in light of the £500,000 the Chancellor has just signed off on in order to improve his image and that is taxpayers money too.

> I've said about a dozen times on here that no one should resign over such trivia

Well clearly people disagree with you. Lying to Parliament is not trivia. Cabinet Ministers should resign, in fact they should be fired, if they're caught lying to Parliament about past events.
Ellipsis: "Lying to Parliament is not trivia." - indeed, you lefties keep harping on about porkies but appear to have no idea what one actually is and even less idea of an example. Still waiting for an example of a lie told by Boris generally let alone to the house.
ToraToraTora, the parties are not the issue, resigning matters or not.
It is the lying about them and possible interference by the Prime Minister into the imminent report that is the main crux and focus of the matter and that is certainly what the parliamentary standards committee are looking into.
Misleading parliament is a resigning matter, the Prime Ministers own rules tell him that so he’s already broken one set of his own Covid laws and legislation, it looks increasingly certain he’s done it in the political sphere too.
DH: "Misleading parliament is a resigning matter," - I agree can you give me an example of how the PM has mislead parliament?
Lefties? There must be a lot of Conservative back bench MPs who are lefties too if their actions over the last few months in parliament are anything to go by!
ToraToraTora, you really need to wake up and smell what you are shovelling, you can’t blindly attack MPs, civil servants and the media for placing the Prime Minister under severe scrutiny about his integrity, he’s done that all by himself.
Can you give me an example of how the PM has mislead parliament?
The question of whether he misled Parliament will be investigated by a Commoms committee so there's little point arguing the toss on here.
I kind of hope the eternally spiteful - and that includes the disingenuous who present themselves as saints- among you get your wish and he resigns - and I wouldn’t blame him if he did. All I can say is be careful what you wish for. Good luck.
Dear God it's a fixed penalty ticket not rape.

dear God it is the stream of lies dissimulation (*) and evasion that has irritated the voter

(*) dissimulation is a long word and I apologise for using it on AB. 5-10 ABers take up the position of the man on the Bridge in the picture called 'The Scream' Edvard Munch
Who is DH? Are you confusing me with another user in your blind panic over the impending resignation of the Prime Minister?
The Prime Minister has not been found to have misled parliament

Yet.
That is why there is an open investigation into him by his colleagues and peers in the House of Commons.
The pictures prove he’s lied about the parties. He certainly wasn’t ambushed with a cake at this one, looks more like he gatecrashed a full scale booze up and actively took part.
That alone makes him a liar, I’m sure the misleading parliament process may become moot when he’s forced to resign or is ousted before that concludes.
Let’s see what other pictures emerge in the next few days and we get to read the full text of the Gray report, yes?
Tora. Many of us who have no time for Johnson and his cronies are not lefties. Neither are we rabid. Are you not able to make your point using a better argument than that?

What puzzles me is that they held these get togethers/parties at all. Surely they should have know it would become public knowledge. Are they so cocky that they didn't care...or just, despite all their wheeling and dealing....a little bit dim?
Bit of a puzzle to me too that there are folk happy to have the likes of Johnson as PM. Still, at least I can now shake my head in despair from afar.

// I kind of hope the eternally spiteful..//
I keep on saying you are being quite unnecessarily unkind to yourself Naomi
