Find Something Worth Doing

You would think that the British government have got better things to sort, would you not? They are now considering going back to Pounds and ounces.
Have they no Idea or even considered what confusion it will create.
We've been educating kids for god knows how long in kilograms, most older people have got to grips with it or just learned to live with it, so now just throw a spanner in the works.
God knows how much it will cost all sorts of businesses to make changes, an expense most could do without.

I guess retailers will bear the cost of replacing scales if that’s what they want to do. Perhaps if you’d posted a relevant link with your OP, Sandra, the rest of us would know what you’re actually moaning about.
"Under the post-Brexit move, metric units are not expected to be scrapped entirely in Britain but shopkeepers are expected to be free to choose which they use following a government study into the proposal."

This really is a non-story. I hear older people ask for fruit, veg, fish and meat in pounds and ounces often and the shopkeeper obliges.
Even in large supermarkets some customers ask for 'half a pound of cheese and 4 oz ham' at the deli counter.
Shops have always been allowed to use imperial measurements but since 2000 have had to use metric. There was never a law to stop them using both.
This isn't going to cost anyone a penny - I doubt many shops will change.

They are proposing to consult the public about 'it', whatever it may be. It's a sop to little Englanders and those pro Brexit people who thought that this sort of thing was what Brexit was about. Just a stunt consultation announced to time with the Jubilee and perhaps to implement in time for by-elections.
That silly metric system with 10 x 100 grams being a kilo - let’s go back to 16 ounces being a pound, that’s much easier.
Why not go the whole hog and have over 200 pennies in a pound - that’s much logical!
I was schooled in the 70s and 80s, and have only ever worked in grams and kilos.
I accept it’s a choice, but the fact is the metric system is a simpler system.

Naomi, IT didn't even cross my mind that you would need a link to anything, because you always seem to be up to speed with any such happenings, and always have an answer to them, being moaning or otherwise.
For what good reason or advantage would working with two different weights and measures bring other than expense and confusion to many that have be taught only in metric?
Its a bit like bringing back pounds shillings and pence along side decimal.
Obviously one of Boris's late night brainwaves.

Nothing new . Metric system versus Imperial has been talked about in various governments since about the mid 1800s. Shouldn't be too difficult for children to learn the Imperial system. At the moment some of the measurements they use in every day language include---mileage ,speeds, shoe sizes, dress sizes, pint of milk etc.
Think of all the idioms that we will keep. 'They stood miles apart', 'He inched closer to me', 'Give them an inch and they will take a mile'. try using metric for these and somehow it doesn't seem right and those are just a few.
There are dual scales in use now and I suppose that the customer will be able to ask for their goods in either measurement. Tinned goods are usually marked in grams so I don't suppose that will alter.

As for the OP, its not mandatory no one will be forced to do it but what it will do is mean those traders that kept selling in Lbs and oz no longer risk the wrath of the trades and measures Gestapo.
No one is being forced so I really dont see the problem. Although I suspect it will be of little consequence to most, myself included.

Sandra, had you read my post at 15.44 it would have crossed your mind that I’m not ‘up to speed’ with everything and never claimed to be. I said I’d looked this up.
Atheist, I’m not labelling Sandra. She is moaning and I’ve said she’s moaning. Call it an observation. Now what do you mean by Little Englander’? People who appreciate the privilege of living in this country and don’t put the boot in at every opportunity?
I think you - and Sandra - need to stop getting your knickers in a knot over this. The most that will happen is some shops will label both in metric and imperial so no big deal. Just look at the metric bit if that suits you better.
