Girl, 14, with nut allergy nearly died on flight after man ate peanuts

Was he in the wrong?
Is it survival of the fittest or should her parents not put her at risk by sticking her in a tin capsule?

I've given this more thought and put the blame entirely on the parents. Yes, the man was a selfish buffoon but the parents were irresponsible knowingly putting their daughter in danger taking an unnecessary flight. They could have been seated next to a family who had stuffed themselves full of peanut butter sandwiches and peanut ice-cream whilst waiting...

The fact of the matter is if he was a decent bloke, he would have stopped eating the nuts ! To me, it's that simple.

Why would someone, given the knowledge that their snack was putting someone's life at risk, continue to eat it? Not only selfish and arrogant, but could be looked on as criminal.
//I’ve been in a flight where the crew announced that because one passenger had an allergy, no nuts would be served. I don’t think anyone minded at all.//

Been in EXACTLY the same predicament when we went on a family holiday to Benidorm.
My stepson had a nut allergy.
Arrived in Spain an hour and a half later with no fatalites....

What The Funicular is wrong with people??
You cant go a couple of hours without eating a nut For Funks Sake...

I can see it from sides but I often carry nuts as they are a quick fix protein for me.
If I am in need of protein and don’t get it I can be Ill too but obviously not die.
Hmmm it’s an interesting one

Chris as it’s a general discussion I don’t feel it fits in the categories you mentioned
^ Don't forget that peanuts are not nuts - they are legumes and people who are allergic to peanuts can eat macadamias, almonds etc which are still consumed on aircraft ( in premium cabins, usually) with no ill effects.
More folk need to know that, 237. I eat nuts most days. But never peanuts.
//If you have a problem you have to look after yourself.//

I'm with youngmaf on this. If the peril this girl faces is so dire her parents should not place her in a position where it relies on the co-operation of others to keep her safe.

//What was she supposed to do? Travel in a space suit or sit on the wing?//

Not board the aircraft in the first place.

//If going on holiday and thus trusting a plane full of people to comprehend and buy in to the danger is more important than your daughters life then it's the fault of the parents, end of.//

Which really sums up the dilemma. It's unfortunate that there are some things that those with disabilities, ailments or allergies simply must not or should not do. This child should not fly. The risks are simply too great.
So no holidays abroad for this young lady ever in case she happens to be in the same situation with a person who refuses to not eat nutty legumes for a few hours.
In that case you should never be in a car or other vehicle on the road, NJ.
You're really putting yourself at risk. Not everyone drives sober, within speed limits, or abides by rules of the road.
19:50 Rubbish. Sorry but the system works perfectly well
Is it true that peanut allergy is a recent phenomenon? I had never heard of it until recently (i.e. the last forty years). I think that any older person wouldn't take it too seriously, unless they'd had personal experience. Maybe it's a bit like being gay or non-binary - many people would not believe in it and wouldn't feel a duty to behave sensitively or kindly. If I was asked not to eat nuts because of a fellow traveller's allergy, I would put them away.

Unfortunately not. Unless she wants to run the risk that some ignorant bar steward will eat legumes against her wishes. She's not old enough to make that decision for herself yet and until she is her parents must do so on her behalf. My view is that they should not take that risk (if indeed the outcome is as potentially serious as they describe). Their call, but there's no point in rucking and moaning when other passengers fail to co-operate.
Many older people don't, Atheist. They seem to think we're jumping on some sort of attention seeking bandwagon.
I ate peanuts many times a week. I loved them. I was almost 40 when, at a NYE party, I ate peanuts and for some unknown reason the allergy started in a strange way.
When a reaction to peanuts as the cause of my problems was suggested I did a stupid thing. Ate none for about a month then bought a bag to experiment. That was when the anaphylaxis hit.
I would love a bag of peanuts now! I think that an allergy can go as quickly and strangely as it came....but I'm not brave enough to try it. :-)
Interesting, Douglas. Maybe different for children that monthly ingestion can boost tolerance. That would be good.
When I did that I was warned not to do it again as I'd probably die despite carrying two Epipens.
I didn’t develop hay fever until I was in my 40’s.
An allergy can manifest itself in anyone at any time.
Aye, I think it's a 'don't try this at home' one but might be worth having a word with ones GP.
Wouldn't try it from this field in the back of beyond, Douglas! It was my GP who said two things to me when I discussed it with him.

1. Don't ever do that again, Gness. You won't be so lucky next time.

2. I really hope I never develop an allergy to cold sausages and horseradish sauce. Can't think of living without those.
