Boris as PM was undoubtedly the Labour Party’s biggest asset, and offered the best chance of them winning the next general election. Perhaps Starmer and the rest did not believe calling for his resignation would come to anything.

But Boris has inflicted untold damage on the Tory party, and they still might pay for it at the next election – the unsuitability of Boris to hold any office of responsibility was there for all to see long before he became an MP.

My vote for his successor is Steve Baker, as a backbencher he is not tainted by association with Boris (as most of the front-runners are).

Hopefully TTT and Naomi24 will be suitably rewarded for their undying support, with Boris ennobling them in his resignation honours list.

Part of the opposition's job is to call for the PM's (or any other govt member's) resignation if there's ever any sniff of that being a possibility. It's just what they have to do.

No doubt in private they will definitely be aware that with johnson gone they have less chance of winning an election.
(Unless Gove or Liz Truss takes over of course).
