NYT is calling it reckless… but Newt Gingrich did it in the 90s and even some of Trump’s old cabinet have supported her….

It’ll look weak if it’s assessed she is definitely going and then doesn’t.

So, in such circumstances, yes.
She came to Chorley, so Taiwan should be a walkover for her...
Definitely - anything to deter China from going in there, causing a blood bath and enslaving even more people.
In what way do you think she's a deterrent, dave?
She has to go because she said she was going? Mmm.
Does anyone know why she's going there against the wishes of her own colleagues, the US administration.
She’s representing Congress. Not the US government.
As the link explains, Biden seems dubious about it
It’s not on the official itinerary. So there’s an out there
Her official schedule does not include Taiwan, but rumours are she will make a stop there anyway.

The Chinese will see it as a provocative act, but so what, the US and Taiwan can meet whoever they want to.

Biden will see a visit as unhelpful and anti productive.

// Pelosi, who is currently leading a congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region, planned to make stops in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan for high-level meetings. A recent statement from her office made no mention of Taiwan, but reports from the US indicated that officials from the Biden administration expected Pelosi to include a stop in the self-governing island.
The Financial Times had also reported that Pelosi planned to meet Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen on Wednesday, August 2, citing three people “familiar with the situation.” //
Yes. Maybe she can make a speech with a few home truths about China while she is there too.
but it did not end well for newt Gingrich
forced to resign

Political scientists have credited Gingrich with playing a key role in undermining democratic norms in the United States and hastening political polarization and partisanship

a foot soldier for freedom then
Question Author
what are the benefits to be had from such a visit?

is now really a good time to provoke China?
Question Author
"not looking weak" seems flimsy ichkeria
of course she should.
If she was definitely planning a visit she’d go no matter what.
It’s been left in doubt so if she doesn’t go it’ll be a way out.
It’s sensible.
It's not provoking it's deterring. Pointing out they aren't the omnipotent power they like to think they are when they mistreat citizens and look at expanding boundaries further; or try to tell other nations what they are allowed to do outside of China.
Backing down in the face of China's impotent threats is never sensible. It not only encourages them but sends a message to all other tyrants in the world that the west is weak & useless, so they can carry on doing whatever atrocities they want.
^ Yeah. Who do they think they are, America?
Clearly not. America tries to be a democracy and to the best of my knowledge aren't committing genocide on Alaskans, nor telling telling China that they can't visit Mexico because it's theirs and they'll take it someday.
Your analogy with Mexico would only work if China (and the UN) had already agreed that Mexico belonged to the US.
What a strange, rose-tinted view you have of American foreign policy, OG. Or the World's Policeman as they like to be known.
Question Author
how do you know that china's threats are impotent?

i don't see the advantage in provoking them at the moment
The result of the Chinese civil war was the Communists won and took control of mainland China.
The losing side, the Republic of China retreat to Taiwan and other islands.
Communist China regards Taiwan as unfinished business, and has threaten ever since.

America would be better advised to stay out of the argument for fear of making the situation worse.

Taiwan makes a quarter of the world’s semi conductors and a conflict there would have serious implications on technology in the west.
