Don't think Martina was a random choice to comment. She has spoken out against the unfairness of allowing trans women to compete in women's sports (described in detail in her wikipedia entry). She made a TV programme two or three years ago examining the subject in more depth and interviewing a range of people involved. I thought she spoke a lot of sense and came across very well, unlike some of her interviewees.

I often used to wonder after our children were born that the Health Visitor was invariably a spinster in her late 50’s?

Without knowing the calibre or quality of all the applicants, it is difficult to judge this situation.

Given equal ability, then obviously a female candidate is preferable, but we have no evidence that this was the case.
