Boris Bows out as PM , Tomorrow. With his Party in a pretty poor shape in the opinion Polls. The key difference between now and then, is that in 2019 The Tories were well ahead of Labour , while now they are well behind Labour. ...He has damaged the Cons almost a bad as Thatcher did. and will put them out of Govt for some time ...

untitled: "In our history yes, because of the electoral system we use…" - no party has ever achieved over 50% in countries they have PR either, that is why Italy has a GE every 10 minutes. Whilst far from perfect, FPTP is the best that's been devised.
I don’t agree, i think it weakens our democracy

Party A - 30% of vote
Party B - 25%
Party C - 20%
Party D - 15%
Party E - 10%

under our system party A wins even though 70% didn’t vote for them… this guarantees minority rule if the minority is just about large enough… Writ large, that is how UK elections are decided. It is no surprising then that the tory party is so extremely successful in such a system…
Yes but PR does not change the percentages. All it does is produce coalitions, ie paralysis. Under PR no one ever wins.
Pr is not the only alternative… but even if it were i think coalitions have more legitimacy
Untitled: In 2011 we had a referendum on AV, a form of PR. This was part of the deal for the Lib Non Dem/Tory coalition. 68% voted against so over 2 thirds did not want the system changed. The people seem to like it the way it is.
I have asked the purveyors of some other system many times to tell me what they propose. All I get is them telling me PR is not the only alternative and then they suggest a form of PR.
Coalitions do not necessarily lead to paralysis and minority rule does not necessarily lead to good government… no system can possibly guarantee that!!
AV is not a form of PR unless i am mistaken
untitled: "...and minority rule does not necessarily lead to good government" - I'd say minority rule never leads to good government, they spend all their time fighting for their position rather than actually governing, seems an odd thing to say.
AV is a form of PR.
the system we presently live under in the UK is one of minority rule
i don’t think it is…. but if i am wrong i would still prefer it (or a conventional pr system) to ours
For those who missed it, this is Johnson exactly as he is.
For his diehard fans, please feel free to counter any of it.

untitled: "the system we presently live under in the UK is one of minority rule " - rubbish, the government has a large majority. You are only looking at the percentages, which, like the polls are meaningless under our system.
untitled, have you studied PR in other countries?
the fact that they are meaningless under our system is a big problem with it… uk elections are decided by 35-42% of the electorate. A big number but a minority who get 100% of the political power.
yes
....and what were your conclusions?
I kinda liked Boris (I, know, I know) better than the drips May, and Cameron but at least we can now look forward to the next rabbit dropping.
TTT,
They had a referendum on AV, but not on implementing the fixed term parliament without consulting the electorate.
Fortunately when the dumped the LibDems after 2015, they also dumped the FTPA and inormalicy has reigned ever since.
