/Angela Rayner voices concerns over Liz Truss's chief of staff
Labour has written to the cabinet secretary over what the party describes as "hugely concerning" allegations against Liz Truss's chief of staff.
Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the opposition, wants Simon Case to investigate allegations first reported in The Sunday Times about Mark Fullbrook.
The PM's official spokesman yesterday said Mr Fulbrook had Liz Truss's "full support."
Mr Fullbrook has not travelled to New York for the UN General Assembly with the prime minister, but Number 10 insisted he was working on government business, including help for businesses with energy costs and Friday's mini budget.
Ms Rayner wrote that it was "hugely concerning to see reports over the weekend that the new Downing Street chief of staff has been interviewed by the FBI over links to an alleged plot to influence a US election. These are incredibly alarming revelations which the public will rightly want clarity on."
The FBI probe relates to allegations that financier and Tory donor Julio Herrera Velutini promised to help the former governor of Puerto Rico get re-elected if she dismissed an official investigating a bank he owned there.
He has denied the charges against him.
Mr Velutini is alleged to have paid CT Group, a political consultancy firm in which Mr Fullbrook was a senior figure, for work intended to help the former governor's ultimately unsuccessful re-election campaign in 2020.
Ms Rayner said: "Those who held out the slightest hope that Liz Truss would turn the page on years of Tory sleaze, can already see just weeks into office that she's already delivering more of the same. She urgently needs to come clean on what she knew and when.
"The new prime minister is covering up what she knew about this troubling case. Her judgement is now in the spotlight as the man she appointed to her side less than a fortnight ago is reportedly embroiled in a troubling foreign bribery probe involving the FBI."/
Is this going to be Pincher Mk 2?Certainly doesn’t bode well for the Truss/Biden talks later, does it?
