Can the Truss just call a general election, doesn't parliament have to agree it? She can resign but surely the Tories can then just elect a new leader (by some process).

Ken, the trouble is the Opinium poll predicting Hunt will lose his seat at a general election.

Perhaps he could be a sort of private-sector PM, ruling while not actually in government.

If she called for one than the MP's would have little choice but to back it.

From Labours point of view if they voted against then it would be seen as bottling it and trash any chance, if the Tories voted against then whoever came in as PM would simply be hounded out by the MSM and City boys.

I know what your question was, RH. A general election would decide which party governs ... but it wouldn't decide who the leader of that party is. If Truss is ousted, the Conservative Party will decide who their next leader will be.

DRMORGANS, the legislation fixing general elections was repealed and the PM can now call an election any time he or she fancies and no vote is required.
