Andy; you might find this link informative. It relates to sheep, and deals with handling issues, which are obviously an important factor. I have no first-hand experience of abattoirs, but know a man who worked in one, but found if too stressful and so left to work in another field. I suspect that abattoir workers develop a hardness of spirit because of their work (cf police and prison staff) and are unlikely to be caring and sensitive about their work. Attending the daily slaughter of animals in a conveyor-belt manner is unlikely to appeal to sensitive people and must inure the workers to observing pain.

andy-hughes----If you had lived near a slaughter house as I did years ago you would have known what day they were carrying out the killings. The air would be full of the high pitched sounds from the horses and the sound of boards being kicked in desperation as they tried to break free. Then there was the village slaughter house next to our school. The sounds of the pigs squealing and lambs bleating was terrible but worse still was the smell of blood. Animals do sense fear especially when being dragged to their deaths.
^^^^Further more .not long ago a slaughter house a few miles away was closed for a time because of the cruel way that some of the staff were treating the animals. Throwing them across the room and taunting them . Sick, evil s***.
^^^ the animals were sheep and lambs.
Andres and atheist - your explanations of animal behaviour link to the behaviours of animals being confined and herded, against their natural instincts.

It does not address the notion that animals understand or react to the slaughter process.

I maintain that they neither understand or anticipate it because it is outside their experience.
It can appear just a bit odd that despite all the rules and regulations on breeding, farming and transporting animals that in the end it's okay to just string 'em up and cut their throat like in good old bibical times.
Douglas - Ancient religious practices will win out over modern compassion any time, anywhere.

Sadly.
Maybe we should join the other countries that have already banned halal and kosher.
Sweden, Denmark, Norway ,Iceland ,Slovenia, Greece to mention a few.

.
Andres; To justify banning Kosher and Halal, you would really need to demonstrate that they are significantly worse than conventional slaughter methods, otherwise the religions would be extremely miffed. How has it worked in those countries you mentioned?
Should we be worried about religions being miffed ?
atheist^^I haven't gone into all the relevant reasons but from what I can gather is that most of these countries are saying that animal welfare takes precedence over religious practices. Lots of interesting articles on Google.
OG and Andres;
I worry about religions being miffed. Many issues can be discussed rationally and sometimes agreements can be reached. But religions mostly rely on dogmatic authority which doesn't allow for compromise and doesn't allow for compromise or rational discussion and agreement. What can a rational and realistic body do when confronted with an irrational and therefore unrealistic body? In my view, the religious side should be made subordinate to the reasonable side. But the religious reaction does worry me.
And it will always remain thus while secular governments continue to bend over backwards trying not to offend irrational ancient beliefs.
OG; I agree with you.
