Sadly, standing water in the UK rarely freezes to a thickness that will stand any weight, although of course that can't be judged by sight.
We can only hug our own children closer, and feel for those poor parents, especially those who wait for their little ones' bodies to be recovered.

Some lakes are formed by a river which flows in one end & out the other, I don't know if that is the case here, but the terrible thing on such a lake (or a river itself) is a person falling through can be swept along under the remaining solid ice sheet by the current.
It really doesn't bear thinking about.
