Im with you there,gromit.All the interventions we have done to help other countries in trouble has always ended badly for the UK.WWI and WWII for example.Always ended up badly for us Brits.Helping out Belgium against German aggression in the first war.Aiding out Poland in the second war.We should have stood back and let Hitler and his bunch of fascist b*st*rds take over the world.Aye?

Nope. We were on the right side and we did what we had to do. Unfortunately WWII bankrupted the country and the real winners were the United States who got all our assets and influence.

Before the Ayatollah plunged Iran into mediaeval darkness the Shah got a bad press in the liberal West. It's true that his secret service were merciless when it came to any kind of political dissent but for the ordinary man and woman in the street it was a far better place then than it is now.

WWI and WWII were unavoidable and necessary.
Afghanistan and Iraq were part of the unwindable ‘War on Terror’ and were folly.

I guess that what we are seeing now is that opposition is beginning to get "organised." The rise of Social Media and generally better communications, I think, is helping to link more and more sympathisers in a way that would have been much more difficult only a few years ago.
More than that, younger generations especially, see themselves more in a "global" context. They're increasingly sick of been seen as an international pariah.

The religious element of the repressions is increasingly being seen as a distortion of beliefs. As it always has for the whole of history.

When we intervened in WWII,we basically saved the world,gromit,us Brits basically saved the world.If us Brits hadnt intervened,Hitler would have invaded Russia with a massive army,probably early on in 1940,before the Russian winter started.After the Russians had been defeated,he would have started on us Brits.The Yanks would be nowhere to be seen.As i said us Brits saved the world.

Ironically, Khomeini while exiled in France, adopted the new technology at the time, to out smart and out manoeuvre the Shah.
And it is now the internet and social media which is defeating the regime. Failure to be able to control communication and the free will of the young, is what is resulting in freedom getting the upper hand, and the religious oppressors losing their grip. (Hopefully)

WWII was won by the British, the United States and Russia. It took the might of all three to defeat Germany. We did not single handedly save the world.

Yes,but our intervention into WWII was a chance to defeat Hitler.If we hadnt intervened how do you think things would have turned out.France defeated,Poland defeated,only Russia left.Early on in 1940,long before the rasputitsa started Russia would have been overwhelmed within months.After Russia was defeated late 1940,Britain would be an easy target.

Of course the British joining the war was crucial to saving Europe, as was the United States.

Our 20 years in Afghanistan was utterly pointless, achieved absolutely nothing and was always unwinnable. Our intervention resulted in over 400 fatalities, and all for nothing. Are you happy with that ?
