Fwiw I thought your comment was a little odd too Helen. Just so Tora doesn’t think he’s in a minority of one

Bobbisox you must be a very proud mother in law !
"I know how nasty you left wing types can be."
it seems to me that on AB at least vitriolic nastiness is not confined to any political persuasion.
I wonder how much he knew when he put himself up for election - he certainly seems to have risen to the occasion. I didnt listen but was he talking in english or urkranian (is that even a language?)
Some of the coverage of this infuriates me.
“Zelenskyy won’t be getting any fast jets” comments one “expert”
But presumably the promise to train Ukrainian pilots on nato jets is just a sort of joke.
English bedknobs

I’m not sure it would have worked as well in Ukrainian, which was what he spoke in when he addressed Parliament in March remotely
Bednobs sorry :-)

Ukrainian is the official language, they also speak Russian not sure how similar they are.
his speech on the steps of Westminster Palace..particularly when he thanked Boris, gave me a teary moment. A brave proud man
I was horrified when he beat Poroshenko in the election: the last thing Ukraine needs is a comedian as head of state, I thought.
I was quite impressed by him when he took office: the expression on his face when he was being harangued by Trump
was let’s say interesting.
He really came to prominence internationally when he made that speech at the Munich security conference, just before the second invasion (I’m glad the impressive Lindsay Hoyle also pointedly called it that)
Ichkeria, he has more than proved his worth I'd say, he has such presence and commands respect.
Pure Ukrainian is actually quite different from Russian.
It’s weird because some words are the same, some are kind of similar, and some are utterly different:
An iron you iron with in Russian for example is a “utyug”
In Ukrainian it’s a “praska”!
And the months of the year are totally different
The thing is most people don’t speak “pure Ukrainian” but “surzhik” which is a mixture. Mind you in the west, where I’ve never been, it’s probably different
you are familiar with the Ukraine Ichkeria ? you sound very knowledgeable
Do you mean my son in law Babypuss? Yes I am extremely proud of him and his colleagues who took 11 vehicles packed with stuff that the people of my hometown collected for Ukraine
He’s not afraid to take tough decisions. We have people fighting near Bakhmut just now and they reckon his decree theoretically sentencing deserters and those refusing to obey orders to 15 years jail is going to cause huge issues in the armed forces. I don’t know. That may be the stress of 3 months on the front line showing
yes Bobbisox. my goodness what a great thing to do although you must have worried so at the time
No, knowing they could only go as far as the border with Poland and from there large Ukrainian trucks helped empty the smaller vehicles , one of the lighter moments was when he was handed one of these rubber bracelets by one of the Ukrainian drivers as a thank you , it read F*** Putin , he still has it :0)
ha ha, such bracelets may be worth a small fortune in the future
Yes and I was most impressed.
I have a differing view. Oh yes, let's send him all our fighter jets and whatever else he wants and leave ourselves totally defenceless! Putin would love that. Also, does he never wear anything else other than that brown jumper?

I personally think my country has done enough.
Well maybe you should credit the government with some intelligence?

As someone said earlier: our first line of defence just now is actually in Ukraine. Not the White Cliffs.
Who else do you think is going to attack the UK? Ireland? Iceland?
I sort of feel the same as fitdarren. People are idolising Zelensky and there is far more than meets the eye to this whole situation. There are two sides to every story. I feel sorry for everyone . in this war.
