I can't find that anyone else has posted this, wasn't it only yesterday someone on here said terrorism in Northern Ireland was a thing of the past? How can this still be considered the right way to solve problems in this day and age? OK I know it's not proved as terrorism..yet

Our first reaction was "That sounds like the I.R.A.".

Prudie, logic and progressive thinking have no chance against entrenched thinking. Terrorism means that the more people you scare, the more effective it is. It's hard to believe that 'in this day and age'people consider this the right way to solve problems, but people don't change that much - just look at Russia's war.

The simple fact is, IRA terrorists are not looking for a way to solve problems, they like killing people under the mantle of patriotism, it has nothing to do with their demands which were not feasible then, and are not feasible now.

It's like all terrorism - conforming to a notional 'cause' means you can look at yourself in a mirror and say,

'I am a patriot / religious zealot / protector of my country ... insert your own 'cause' label here'

Instead of the reality, which is looking in a mirror and saying to your reflection - "I am an unhinged psychopath with no respect for the views and lives of anyone else who doesn't think like I do."

We all get through the day the best we can, and we all spend some time looking in that mirror, telling ourselves that we are OK - whether we actually are, or not.

To be honest I thought more posters would comment on their horror at this. Maybe it's too close for comfort. Much easier to rant about who gets shot in the States, it's an ocean away.

So you did Roy, sorry. I didn't hear about it until the radio news this morning and was surprised it wasn't on AB already. I assume by the old days you mean 70s/80s/90s ich? It might be rare...at the moment. This is a man putting footballs in his car boot with his son present getting shot, falling to the ground and repeatedly shot again. In the name of politics, in the UK. It makes my blood run cold.

It was a horrific incident Prudie. His son witnessed it, and other children who had been playing football too apparently.
I sometimes watch the news review section on the This Morning programme and was disappointed to see that it wasn't mentioned today. The incident happened at 8pm last night so it wasn't exactly breaking news.

I was pleasantly surprised that peace in Northern Ireland has lasted so long after the Good Friday agreement. What a great place Ireland North and Eire are and have been, in recent years. If these extremists return to the trouble years Northern Ireland will return to the dark ages and quite frankly the final resolution should be, for Ireland to return to one United country. Another country falling foul to religious beliefs and bigotry!.

Violence is always in the background to be resorted to if one can not get one's own way. Just because it was put on the back burner when a combination of wanting an end to violence, and there was possible progress to a compromise solution, doesn't mean it's ever unavailable if belief is lost. It was always a possible consequence if one or other side feels they're views are being pushed aside. Or alternatively it may be just a few evil individuals wanting to main & kill because their mind works that way.

On a lunch break dmso thought I would comment.
There has been terrorist activity in by NI all the time, it doesn’t make the national news, so everyone thinks it’s hunky dory here. It’s not!!
Knee capping is still a frequent occurrence as is intimidation and police and security personnel having to hide who they are.
