oh dear no - English is not prescriptive, unlike French ( academie francaise) and Spanish ( Academia Real) - this is why English dictionaries list "wrong" meanings, because that is how people use them. (Disinterested means fair and unbiassed. Uninterested is listed as a second meaning even tho most peope wd say it is wrong).
if english had rules - then we would be speaking shakespearean english wouldnt we? ( Late Middle English to knobs)

When people talk about Twitter, generally it's not just talking about a website and app - it's talking about what people are saying to each other on those websites and apps, what their moderators are doing and how the technology is working. That's not something inert like a hammer, it's more like an ecosystem.
Ellipsis - Thanks for being the voice of reason.
Ellipsis - Thanks for agreeing with me.
sociolinguists ( mushie and jno) would agree
The word ( twitter that is!) is taken within context - which depends on past experiences of those discussing
( think of african "freedom" or free in freedom and wee free kerrrrk)
this isnt very AB is it
Has anyone noticed that ELlipsis point is in direct opposition to 'grrammar has rules' which one of our intellects was espousing a day or so ago?

‘Zacs, roadman, myself and obviously Douglas find nothing wrong with the hammer analogy but we're all wrong because you say so... ‘
Grow up.’
Indeed. Andy goes off on one of his crazy righteous crusaded. You need to wake up to the fact that you’re out of step with……just about everyone else, Andy. I suspect you’ve come across this many many times in your life.

All I've done is point out the flaw in an analogy offered in a post.
The reason for the hostility from the usual suspects, is based, not on the fact that they actually believe that the analogy is not faulty - it is - but that because it is me that is pointing it out.
If anyone else made the same point, there would not be the standard huffing and puffing from my coterie of hostiles, which bothers me not one bit, as I am sure you can imagine.
They, and you, can dislike the fact that I am 'off on a crazy righteous crusade ...' as you put it, but that's because, in common with the rest of the hostiles, it is not that the analogy fault is incorrect, it's that you wish it were, so you can be rude to be about it.
I think you all need a sense of perspective, and to remember the age-old adage about playing the man, not the ball.

If I an wrong, history on this site shows that I am always happy to admit it.
At least you have sharply shifted your position from personal offence to simply arguing my original point, so the evening has not been wasted.
See if you can maintain that adult approach, your contributions will thank you.

I find Twitter very useful, my local police, councillors, highways dept, public transport companies, news sites all post useful time relevant information.
Companies respond very quickly to my complaints.
I do follow some interesting people, none of whom are conspiracy theorists, influencers or bonkers
