I never realised quite how much energy Ukraine used to generate: they were set to be one of the EU’s main energy suppliers. The water of the Dnipro river is used to good effect for huge hydroelectric stations and to supply reservoirs that provide coolant for nuclear reactors such as the huge one at Enerhodar.
Quiz question: name the three countries in Europe that have to date refused to send aid of any sort to Ukraine. The answer might surprise …
Serbia, a supposed friend of Russia, has been supplying military aid and even Orban’s Hungary has been helping train Ukrainian forces.
And Switzerland, unlike its neighbour, has not huffed and puffed unduly about its neutrality …
"Austria has taken in more than 90,000 displaced Ukrainians and provided over 124 million euros in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Austria also signed a framework agreement worth 600 million euros for the construction of three hospitals in Ukraine."
Austria has sent some non-lethal aid its true.
Actually Cyprus might be added to the list …
Bosnia claims to be blocked by Serbia.
Not sure about that …
I can see great things for the Ukraine after the war is over. No doubt they'll join NATO and probably the EUSSR. potentially huge exporters of energy and grain etc.
But it’s not easy to destroy these places. They are - especially nuclear power stations these days - built to resist wars. And even the Russians have hesitated to bust dams like Nova Kakhovka because the consequences would not be good due them. What they’ll do when they are forced out of Enerhodar, and hopefully soon Kherson oblast to the south, is anyone’s guess. But Crimea is also fed by this water, so …
Russian military assets in the Zaporizhzhya region town of Melitopol have been pounded for weeks: another huge strike last night. A probably sign that the counter offensive is not long off. Some say days but who knows
The other thing - (apart from apologising (partially) to Austria and Malta) to say is that the Russians probably would not in any case wish to destroy the big power stations as they supply occupied areas too of course.
Cock and bull story in todays Times about a supposed failed attempt by Ukraine to storm the Enerhodar NPP last October
