....get another job. Why chose a career that you are not happy with? Why does anyone join a union? Surely it just means you need a crutch because you are either bad at your job or you can't get a job that pays a wage you can live on.

//I remember when I worked at a local authority the NALGO rep had a go at me for not taking enough sick time.//

“Whitley” days, Tora, named after the Whitley Council which, among other things, negotiated the principle that if you went sick whilst taking your annual leave, the days you were sick did not count against your annual leave allowance.

Apparently the pseudo-Marxist who is running the negotiations for the BMA, its co-chairman Dr Robert Laurenson, suggests that a 35% pay rise is necessary because doctor have suffered erosion of their pay for over twelve years as a result of below inflation pay rises. So if the pay is so terrible, why has anybody joined the profession in the past ten years or so?

Dr Laurenson, who was educated at the £46,000 per year Sevenoaks school, is listed alongside his parents and brothers as a director of his parents’ business, Westholme Investments Limited. The business currently holds over £2million of investments and previously ran a Surrey golf course described as 'one of the finest' in the county. He was granted his directorship aged a8, just before beginning his medical training:

He is currently a trainee GP in Dartford or somewhere,

I don't understand how people can object to a minimum wage .

Perhaps I'm strange

bazile: "Perhaps I'm strange " - you may be on to something there.
The argument for huge, unreasonable , unrealistic pay rise is claimed to needed to redress many years of little or no pay rises. I suspect just as many others outside the med profession. So what were the relevant unions doing all that time? Not pursuing pay claims , apparently
Maybe now the unions have had enough of the government using the same old excuses (unreasonable wage increases) for the last 13 years, so this time action is required. You can only get away with kicking the ball into the long grass for so long.Aircooled.
Ah, the good old days. 1970s and older. How much was your student debt? What ... none?

Perhaps actually have a conversation with a junior doctor or two in the NHS in 2023 ... it's not what it used to be.
You have to pay CEOs, bankers etc very well (including bonuses) or they'd take their talents elsewhere.

On the other hand junior doctors, nurses, train drivers etc should get another job if they want more money.
I'm sure junior doctors are happy with their careers. But I believe that they can earn twice the wages in Australia that they would get here.
The labourer is worthy of his hire.
their job is an essential one that must be done by somebody... and those that do their vital work are entitled to a decent living.
Perhaps an independent, arms-length body should be set up for their pay award, y'know, like politicians have and which tends to offer a reasonable amount.

Rather than rely on those same politicians to sort it out. They are known for their incompetence and a complete lack of work ethic.
