Cultural differences.
Ah, didn't know there was a thread on it.

More in plain sight than Jimmy Savile but it will soon be forgotten.
I would suggest that his Holiness was being playful, and because of the sheltered life he leads, was unaware of the connotations of what he was saying.
Perhaps he's a perverted child molester
Hopkirk - // Perhaps he's a perverted child molester //

Perhaps he isn't - how can we know.
Mixing with world leaders and the great and the good is hardly reclusive behaviour from the millionaire monk.
Douglas - // Mixing with world leaders and the great and the good is hardly reclusive behaviour from the millionaire monk. //

I did not say 'reclusive', I said 'sheltered' - the two words have very different meanings, and I always choose mine carefully to explain exactly what I mean.

They do get misinterpreted, as in this case, but there is nothing I can do about that.
Okay then, he's the leader of a world religion and not sheltered.
douglas - // Okay then, he's the leader of a world religion and not sheltered. //

I think he is.

By virtue of his faith and his position, he does not lead a standard life in the wider world that gives him access to social attitudes.

Every single person he interacts with behaves differently towards him than they do with anyone else, ever, because of who and what he is.

That means he does not interact with the rest of the world in a way that would educate him in social attitudes, and appropriate behaviour.

He is like all religious hierarchy, an arrested adolescent, and that occasionally shows in his in appropriate behaviour.
I’m sure he has the Internet.
Well it was hardly done in secret was it, so I doubt it was no more than misguided hi jinx.
Zacs - // I’m sure he has the Internet. //

And your point is?
If anyone else did that they would be arrested. Imagine if it was your local catholic priest.
Maybe he should have you round for a day or two, clue him in about, well, everything, as you do with folk.

Do you do that Hopkirk?

Can't say I noticed ...
Hopkirk - // If anyone else did that they would be arrested. Imagine if it was your local catholic priest. //

Your local catholic priest would know better - none of them live the sheltered life of His Holiness.
Plenty of them don't know any better!
Hopkirk - // Plenty of them don't know any better! //

History shows that they know enough to keep their abuse away from TV cameras.

It's clear from the apology offered, that his Holiness has been made aware of the inappropriateness of his behaviour, and he has issued an apology for it.
Why are you defending this man?
I am a Catholic not that much practising but what I saw with his tongue towards a very young child - should not have happened.

I am friends with about 4 priests and if they stuck their tongue out at me - I'd cut it off.
