Racism works both ways, this sort of thing has to stop if we are to be one people. And how black do you need to be before being made unwelcome?

minorities who are mistreated often turn to each other for support/community and that community does not vanish when the mistreatment ends.... nor should it necessarily... this is just an example of that

untitled: " there's a whole city of theatres right outside that are not doing this..." - so we can use one to put on a White only play? Can you imagine the uproar, from you for a start?! You are thrashing around trying to say anti white discrimination is ok. It's racism pure and simple and you are digging yourself a hole me old china.
"but you are ok with a black only show. Please explain."
to put it very very simply... i can understand why some (probably not most) black people might find an evening of entertainment without white people appealing... i cannot say the same for a hypothetical group of whites who decide they don't want any black people present...

untitled: " i can understand why some (probably not most) black people might find an evening of entertainment without white people appealing... i cannot say the same for a hypothetical group of whites who decide they don't want any black people present... " - why not? why is it ok for blacks to enjoy an evening of entertainment without whites? Why are they seemingly allowed to find that "appealing"? When the opposite with cause an outrage. The fact that you are marking them out as different is itself racism isn't it?

"allowed"? what an interesting word. Would you rather they were disallowed?
to answer... because black people in britain have something of a shared identity that was created by a history of mistreatment by the white majority... i do not necessarily think it healthy to indulge in that but i can understand the appeal... white britons per se do not. the only reason white britons would plausibly have to exclude black people are to take some kind of anti-black political stance which i find less understandable

Maybe they could put on a performance of 'Seven sevens are forty-nine' - a play we did at school where four of us were 'blacked up' to play natives on a desert island where a boatload of school children were washed ashore after a shipwreck and they stumbled across these native children reciting the seven times table and the teacher was their own headmaster - I think it turned out to be a dream but that's the gist of it. Took my mum hours to get the blacking off me and my mate!

So would black people as a group be categorically disadvantaged by white people putting on a whites-only show? Even if there was a whole host of theatres not doing so? Even if it was just one night and one tiny theatre?
If so, please explain why, if the circumstances were identical, black people would suffer from this, whilst white people, apparently, would not?
Your argument simply does not hold water. What you are suggesting is that black people need to be able to operate discriminative policies, whereas white people don’t (and I can imagine the outrage if they attempted to do so). Discrimination is discrimination, no matter who the victims are. It is somewhat strange to argue that the way to help overcome discrimination is to introduce something that demonstrates just that – even if it is a one-off.
More than that, the justification for this is nothing short of offensive. There is a need, apparently, to create “…a safe, private space for an all-black identifying audience, free from the white gaze.” I am at a loss to know how you can defend such a statement. It implies that, should white people be present, the space would no longer be safe; that white people, by their nature, present a risk to the safety of black people; that their “gaze” is somehow intrusive and cannot be tolerated. The language is inflammatory, the practice is divisive and discriminatory. If white people made a similar proposition they would – quite rightly – be howled down and so should the black people considering this insulting nonsense. Because you believe they have a valid reason (which I do not agree with but that is neither here nor there) does not make it any more acceptable. It’s time for them to get over their “shared history of mistreatment” and begin living in the present.

There was somebody on this board a few years ago who tried to argue that South Africa's expropriation without compensation of white-owned farms (and only white-owned farms) was not racism.
Given untitled's bizarre stance on this thread on something that is undeniably racist, I wonder if he/she would be of the same opinion.
If I had to explain to a child what racism is, this would be a perfect example.

//Yet the very people who are most vocal on social media, the self-proclaimed prophets of the Black Lives Matter movement, are silent about the Theatre Royal’s announcement.
It makes me wonder whether some who claim to be fighting for racial equality are really more interested in stirring up hatred.//
BLM. Say no more
