Racism works both ways, this sort of thing has to stop if we are to be one people. And how black do you need to be before being made unwelcome?

so yes i do think it is different. i'll get worried about it if i think white people are at risk of categorical discrimination and violence per se but i truly do not think that is the case

"Given untitled's bizarre stance on this thread on something that is undeniably racist, I wonder if he/she would be of the same opinion. "
i am not of the same opinion no... that was the power of the state levelled aggressively against a community because of their skin colour
i think it rather odd to strike a comparison between that and the behaviour of a minor theatre company lol

Actually, intelligent readers would spot that you are making a comparison between a river full of live salmon and a box full of dead frogs. The comparison you should be making is of black people putting on a performance where white people are not welcomed and white people putting on a performance where black people are not welcomed. When making that comparison you would find that, to most people (including many black people) both are equally offensive. The difference is that you try to justify the black performance by making an exaggerated claim about black people’s treatment in this country (certainly the treatment meted out to those of the age the participants of this performance probably are).
As I said, if there are any people who are hung up on the subject of your exaggeration, they should try living in the present and not the past.

i think i have explained why i think those situations are in fact different.
"making an exaggerated claim about black people’s treatment in this country ""
and there is the root of our disagreement. I don't think it is an exaggeration...
"The fundamental principle is the same, in so far as both are examples of seemingly 'acceptable' racism"
one is a government stripping people of assets because of their race... the other is a lone theatre putting on a night for black patrons... surely it is obvious that one of these counts as persecution and one does not?

Plenty of other nights for you to go along, and incidentally the controversial night in question is sold out now anyhow.

You have (deliberately?) missed the point.
It is racism pure and simply, and I am sure you would be shouting from the roof tops(quite rightly) if the other way round. Would you simply tell black people to go on another night? I hope not.
It seems the author (a black lady) can see it but TROB on here cant. Bizzare.

I don't believe I am missing the point. I know where you're coming from, but -- I think -- it's from a mistaken position of symmetry. A minority group wanting one night to themselves, to discuss shared experiences from their point of view, is not being discriminatory towards the majority in so doing. When, as has been made clear, there are amply opportunities for the majority to join in, then that further underlines how manufactured the outrage is here.
The wider context is relevant. It'll go missing here, I'm sure, and I wish I could have a conversation with you about this on equal and respectful terms. But there's no shame in recognising that, on occasion, minorities might like a little time to themselves, and I'd encourage people to understand why that might be the case in ways that *don't* involve throwing accusations of racism or double standards around.
