Emergency evacuation of villages and islands taking place.
Luckily the flood water appears to be rising slowly
Question Author
Having said that, there is no evidence people on the Russia-occupied side of the river (which is the one most at risk) are being warned by the local “authorities”.
Apparently peak water level will occur in three hours.
Probably around the time the BBC finally reports it :-)
Perhaps their investigations want to discount any 'potential' stuff, sticking with facts to save having to backtrack almost immediately.

Of course I'm guessing too.
Not the news you want to wake up to. Here's hoping for minimal destruction and loss.
Question Author
The dam has definitely been blown.
They are probably waiting until they can say: “Russia says Ukraine blows dam (this cannot be independently verified)” lol
This is plainly an attempt to slow/stop a putative Ukrainian attempt to cross the Dnipro there. However the dam is also used to supply Crimea with water.
It’s part of a huge complex of hydroelectric power on the mighty Dnipro. Also used to cool the Enerhodar NPP
Zelensky has already reacted with a defiant statement.
Question Author
They’ve gone with “Russia blows damn
says Kyiv”
Lol

It was great to hear an interviewee on Sky last night criticising the BBC )not by name) for their slavish reporting of Russian press releases
evil
It's going to get far far worse. Sadly thousands are set to die.
Question Author
The people on the Kherson city side will be ok as they are being evacuated.
Concerns more for the people on the left bank although many of them world already have left before.
This dam turned what was effectively desert into a mini paradise. With the use of the water from the river thus was a lush and fertile ground. South Kherson is known for its water melons especially but people will have had their dachas there and gardens cultivated over decades since Stalin did the same thing in 1941/2.
All that will be gone thanks to the terrorist state which is Russia. What it cannot steal it destroys
Question Author
Just looking at film of someone trying to rescue a dog from a flooded field.
None of this of course will stop the counter offensive.
So: D-Day turned out to be dam day :-(
yeah the Beeb is being rather anal about this
Is the risk to the nuclear power plant upstream really high ?
you create a desert and call it peace
( Brit to Caesar, in Caesar's gallic wars)
Calgacus ^^^
Question Author
“Is the risk to the nuclear power plant upstream really high ?”

There is no risk to the NPP: it has a reservoir and a huge square-shaped “pond” which is full.
As long as the Russians don’t do something to this pool then the cooling system won’t be affected.
This is primarily an ecological catastrophe: mercifully the topography, the nature of the dam, of the river even - perversely due to its sheer size meaning it ought to be able to manage itself longer term - all should mean loss of life is limited. Of course they’re also flooding their own trenches (!)
I’m reading of a historic artist museum in the town of Oleshki on the left/south bank which is likely to be obliterated.

Re the BBC: “anal” is right. Not biased just infuriatingly “neutral”.
Question Author
And this action should tell you everything about how the Russians rate their chances of withstanding the imminent onslaught …
Some footage of the breach
Question Author
It transpires 150 tons of motor oil were released into the floodwater.

I’m assuming deliberately although it isn’t clear
//infuriatingly “neutral”// is what the BBC and other news organisations are supposed to be.

More colourful or human interest stuff can be supplied by independents once the bare facts are reported.
Question Author
Unbiased but not perversely doublesided

The BBC etc are good at documentary and on the spot reporting but pretty hopeless for war reporting of this sort and their military and security analysis is way off the mark.
In fact this is largely not their fault, but it’s one reason it’s usually pointless relying on them for news
