Ok the shooting of the teen started this but it's now turned into general anarchy. Cleatly criminals are using it as an excuse to go looting etc but is there an underlying cause? Discontent seems to have been bubbling under the surface. So what is the problem? Why are people so unhappy? Anyone have more insight?

The French were already angry about Macron's pension reforms and the dodgy way he got the legislation passed. It's well known that the French police are racist and have wide-ranging powers. Rub two sticks together and what do you get? Fire. The current violence doesn't surprise me at all and it saddens me to see a country I love being wrecked thanks to the actions of a policeman.
Where's our Paris correspondent, Les Miserables, when he's needed?
It’s a bit like farm animals once one or 2 starts a riot everyone follows
Albert Speer? Wasn't he a hangman?

Anyway, I want to know what advice the F.O. are giving to people already holidaying in France as I have a relative on holiday in Paris right now. Been ok so far.

It is very similar to what happened here in 2011 following the police shooting of a man named Mark Duggan.

Was Speer a hangman? I think you may be confused with Pierrepoint who was a British Chief executioner and hung loads of guilty Nazi war criminals after trials at Nuremburg

You can see the FCO advice here:

The current state is as follows ...

Since 27 June, riots have taken place across France. Many have turned violent. Shops, public buildings and parked cars have been targeted. There may be disruptions to road travel and local transport provision may be reduced. Some local authorities may impose curfews. Locations and timing of riots are unpredictable. You should monitor the media, avoid areas where riots are taking place, check the latest advice with operators when travelling and follow the advice of the authorities.

French authorities have banned a rally by groups opposed to the government in Iran planned for 1 July in Paris, due to concerns about security risks; connected events are reported to still be going ahead, however, including in the suburb of Auvers-sur-Oise. A demonstration by the same group in Paris in June 2018 was the target of an attempted bomb attack. British nationals should reconsider any plans to attend such meetings, and if you do, be aware of your surroundings at all times, and move away quickly from disturbances.

I've just emailed a friend in France. She's married to a lovely chap who happens to be French/Algerian. After the 'Charlie' incident he somehow lost his job (Chief Sommelier) and has found it all but impossible to find employment since. I fear for them now.
My daughter and son in law are visiting her old boss , he and his wife live in Limogeswhich I’m told is very rural but hearing the riots are spreading throughout France ,is rather worrying, they were going to hire a car and go site seeing, I hope they don’t
