As mentioned earlier, they'd go directly to a safe country first, regardless whether it was a direct ferry to the Netherlands, a direct flight to Canada, or whatever. Then if they wished to travel on elsewhere would go through the proper channels requesting residency elsewhere.

And I consider it very naive to believe that the vast majority sneaking into the UK without permission are not doing so for economic reasons, looking for a better standard of living at some other people's expense.

You are aware that by taking a flight, America can be the first safe country you visit ? One doesn't have to get put a yardstick to decide whete one can go. However some trips are clearly incompatible with claims to be just fleeing to safety.
