but the ones they could actually get to do something like this are very likely to be aren't they? they must have known they would be tortured if captured. i just think it is very odd.

Like I say, we can speculate till the cows come home, but it seems pointless really. Who knows the mentality of the people involved. Some will be more fanatical than others. And it seems the security forces were very late on the scene, so why not try to escape if you have the chance.

The tv series Spy Catcher ( wizz Col Pinto) involved tea and biccies - no violence. My father was a compulsive viewer as an escapee from a German POW camp ( Eischstatt). He never got shot

The interrogations occurred at the Ham Common Camp ( Ha, Richmond, British chrissakes (*)) - and  was spiced up in the eighties series with table thumping and slapping. There was a furious response from the " Ham secretaries Association" who insisted that NONE of their gairls who were present at EVERY interview witnessed violence.
