SharonA, I think it depends on local councils: members elect leaders the way MPs do and the winners are named mayor. But the London mayoralty is directly elected by voters.

I must say I cannot ever recall having to vote for a local mayor for my area (Walthamstow). So how was Mr Rahman voted back in???

Tower Hamlets is one of five London boroughs to have an elected mayor with executive powers. The other four are Croydon, Hackney, Lewisham and Newham. The rest have a Chief Executive  and cabinet and in those boroughs the post of mayor is largely ceremonial.

In Tower Hamlets, the proposal to change the status of the borough from one with a leader and cabinet to one with an executive mayor was initially opposed by all the main political parties. It was an initiative proposed and supported by the Respect Party which forced the issue. "Islamic Forum Europe" organised a petition to trigger a referendum for this change. Examining the petition,  Council officers stated that almost half the signatures were invalid (you may detect a theme here), with entire pages bearing the same handwriting. Despite the flaws in the petition, there were sufficient valid signatures for the council to accept it, and a referendum was held on 6 May 2010. Almost 60% of those who voted opted for an elected mayor.

Personally I'm torn: he's labour as am I but I think the whole ULEZ thing is a money making scam.

Whe a public meeting was held regarding ULEZ implementation pretty everone attending expressed their views why they were against ULEZ. They were respectful and put forward their Views. Khan had no interest in answering peoples concerns and was downright rude. He called the Londoners Conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxers. That is how he listens and treats people who have a differing opinion on the so-called benefits. Any referendumand vote is already a done deal with khan as he is corrupt to the core. Especially when he massages the true figures to suit his own agendas. The pedstrianisation ofOxford Circus and surrounds was a totally fraudelent excercise. He claimed a victory until he was challenged and most of the people in the area that would of been affected  said they hadn't even received their postal vote that should of been sent out by City Hall. He claimed an administrative error . The man is bent,corrupt and a lying hypocrite.

Back in the general election in which Nigel Farage was standing, I remember a TV reporter asking a Muslim lady in the street for whom she would be voting & she answered, "I don't know, I haven't been told yet."

At the same time, Nigel said he'd seen boxes & boxes of voting papers being delivered to the polling stations by helpful Muslim gents.

It is true that Boris initiated the idea in 2014, but that was only for Central London. It was Khan's vary bad idea to extend it to outer London. A move which Boris was/is vehemently opposed to, calling it "bone-headed."

ULEZ is simply a car owner/driver abuse scheme. The owners have paid their annual road fund licence, no local or regional authority ought to have any power to demand more. Same goes for so called congestion charges which simply allows further highway robbery from drivers and moves congestion elsewhere.

I don't think the Tory candidate is a loon exactly, but she was badly let down by the insane party broadcast claiming the present mayor had "seized power", that London was the crime capital of the world, and that squads of ULEZ enforcers are raiding people's homes. Wisely she disassociated herself from it, but honestly ...

My beef with the ULEZ *scam* is that it affects the poor old Joe Bloggs and his missus that can only afford do the school run and drive to work in their shared 2001 Nissan Micra that they can barely afford to run as it is, and the one bloke in his diesel van scraping a living doing gardening and garden maintenance BUT some big knob in a 2024 six litre V8 Bentley can drive all over London to his heart's content.
(The above might be a bit inaccurate, but you get the idea).

Bentleys that don't pollute are fine. Micras that do are not. Like many inner Londoners, I have this thing about not dying before my time and I'm grateful to Khan for doing his bit.

In my humble opinion, the ability to vote by postal vote should only be granted to people in truly exceptional circumstances.  It should absolutely be banned to all UK domiciled able-bodied people.  Only the most physically infirm people or those on active service outside of Britain should be able to vote in this manner due to the fact that it is such an obvious and proven way to implement voter fraud.  Most other countries have extremely restrictive laws about mail-in voting and for jolly good reason – it has been shown time and time again that the easiest way to subvert the ballot box is by postal votes.  And don’t get me started on electronic voting…

 I have been sent a voting card for our Norfolk Police Commissioner vote in May with the polling station in my village hall. I imagine yours is done the same way.
