So sad.  Seemed like such a lovely guy.

On behalf of his friends and family I can't help feeling a bit cross with him now. It's only natural I suppose to wonder why he thought it OK to set off in that blistering heat, and to wander off the main path knowing he had no phone with him.
I know, he probably thought it would never happen to him but him if all people. He's probably tripped and broken a bone (a police rescuer did the same and had to be stretched out) or collapsed in the heat and died of exhaustion. I feel so sad about it.

Dr Michel Mosley reminded me of Matthew Lewis. One of those rare good guys. What a sad, sad, story.

Matthew Lewis sp? Did you mean Martin Lewis?

I used to work to Matthew Lewis!

Oh the joys of getting old and scatty!

Very sad news indeed.  RIP Michael.

I suppose to wonder why he thought it OK to set off in that blistering heat,

my fave theory is that he had heat stroke and made a bad decision. but  of course that  may be  spurious. Falling off a 10m cliff is easy for someone like  me

Looks like it was heat stroke. Papers are saying "he nearly made it to safety", being found 50 yards from a resort hotel/bar. But he may have been so far gone that it would have been impossible to save him anyway.

Dave Legeno Greyrir Flatpack in Harry Potter tried to run acrross/ in Death Valley and didnt make it ( heat stroke).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Legeno

for those on AB who think this is spurious and disconnected the link is heat stroke

There is one fact that concerns me.  He left his mobile 'phone behind.

Maybe he wasn't expecting to need it or simply forgot. I don't always carry mine when I'm out & about.

I'm puzzled by the phone but also by the umbrella-why leave the phone but take the umbrella. I wonder if he still had the umbrella at the end - that should have  helped pretect him from the direct sun, but I wouldn't want to carry one while traversing rocky paths. We may just have to wait to get a clearer picture

& prOtect

I read that the umbrella was found next to him. Maybe he always carried it in hot and sunny conditions. He may have forgotten the phone and/or assumed what he thought was going to be a 30 minute walk would not require it.

It's been mentioned that he wasn't feeling well beforehand...

Yes thanks- I was just going to post that I'd just read that "he was found with his umbrella, yards from safety"

Poor man, what an awful, tragic end to his life and the devastation his family must feel cannot easily be comprehended.

He went to the beach, swimming and had lunch.  Why would he need his phone?  Maybe the walk back was a spur of the moment decision to work off the lunch?  The question that bothers me is why would an intelligent, medical man decide to walk in mid afternoon when the temperature was at its highest? And it was extremely high that day

//why would an intelligent, medical man decide to walk in mid afternoon when the temperature was at its highest? //

That's exactly what I said, Foxless.  Brains don't equate to sense.

And if it was heatstroke and he'd had his phone with him, would he have been able to make a call and tell someone where he was or been too confused.
