A Leopard Cannot Change Its Spots.....

Labour have always loved low life criminal scum, terrorists and assorted baddies. So lets let 1000s of them out to continue their criminal careers. Wonderful.

But the Tories had already announced plans for something similar. What's the alternative in the short term as prisons are full? The problem has been known about for years. Even this measure will only help for a short period and will have to be extended (ie more released), and some court hearings postponed to help cope with known increases in numbers.
"Ministry of Justice figures show that 10,083 prisoners were allowed to walk free under the end of custody supervised licence (ECSL) scheme between October 2023 and June 2024 in England and Wales.
Under the scheme, announced in October 2023, some prisoners could be freed 18 days before their conditional release date. That was increased to 35 days in March and then to 70 days in May."
//Build some temp camps, like they did for POWs. Ain't rocket is it//
Were you asking The Tories to do the same last year when the issues were clear then?
Hopefully more building will happen but the spin has already started about prisons being too expensive- £600000 per cell to build apparently! Sounds like creative accounting to me. Some prefab type things might help if they are secure enough...but do we have enough prison officers? It may take years to sort this out
600K a cell in clearly nonsence, anyone got any reliable figures?
I think there are a couple fo things here. Firstly with the population growing the infrastructure needs to have a plan and prisons along with hospitals, roads, schools, power etc need to be in that plan.
Immediately, yes release of some prisoners may be ok, start with those jailed for not paying the TV tax :-j and low level crimes, but tags must be used for the duration of the sentence, any violation go straight to Jail.
TTT is correct, Jails need to be humane but harsh. Make it a place no one wants to go.
For lifers and long term prisons contract it out to somewhere like Thailand or Turkey where they know how to run a jail. Make it worth their while and I am sure they would be up for it.
