No one alive today was involved in slavery, no one alive today is a victim of slavery. So what's going on? Do they just want us to give random sums to random people?

Perhaps we could invoice these countries for all the infrastructure, roads, railways and schools we built there?

When you consider that one of the biggest crimes against humanity was the holocaust, why is it that Poland and other affected countries don't keep banging on about "reparation" from Germany.

And how about some reparation for Lee Rigby. That was one of the most savage crimes I have ever known and those affected ARE all alive today.

How about some sort of education fund?  This might help societies which are still suffering from the effects of slavery move on.

I guess the descendants of people who were enslaved by the Spanish, French, or Portuguese, would logically look to those countries for reparations.

My forebears didn't enslave anyone, they were too busy being exploited in the coal-mines and mills of Lancashire and the fields of Somerset to have time to do such a thing.

...and what about invasions and slavery of Britain? Britons were enslaved by foreigners, yet nobody from the UK is demanding reparations from other governments. Consider these invaders of Britain:

1. Romans, 55 B.C. Why aren't we demanding reparations from the Italian government?

2. Vikings, 947 - 1016. Why aren't we demanding reparations from the Scandinavian governments?

3. Normans, 1066. I hear nothing about the UK's demands from the French government.

4. Prince Louis of France, 1215-1217. Are we sending a delegation to the French government?

Countries who demand compensation from the present-day UK government are simply "trying it on", because they see us as a soft touch. Well, then, UK government show us that we are not a soft touch!

"This might help societies which are still suffering from the effects of slavery move on."

Are you talking about the effects of slavery people are suffering from when we were involved in salvery over 200 years ago?

If you are, what are these effects?

Cant we just say sorry for the slavery and that, but we will help you return to your ancestors lands in Africa,we can supply the ships etc,you will be going back to your"roots",etc.I will put a lot more money to help all the Jamaicans,Bermudans,Bahamians go back to Africa.I hope they like it there.

i thought Nigeria was a rich country, I'm always gettin emails asking me for my bank details to help transfer money for a multimillionaire who wants to give his fortune away

A few Nigerians at my work-place webbo, whenever i ask them when they are going back to Nigeria i always get the same response-"maybe next year".

How about a cross petition for reparation for the murders of missionaries ,explorers etc by the ancestors of the present day inhabitants of these countries.

If an empire could be dismantled then breaking up a commonwealth should be straightforward.

Start on Monday though, so Chuck gets his jolly.

If they are not happy in the Caribbean im sure there is room back in Africa, maybe Rwanda isnt as full as it might be

Damn savages...

(Well they still would be if the Europeans hadn't intervened🙄)

@07.30.There was a"Back-to-Africa"movement at one time.(The name Marcus Garvey, seems to ring a bell),however very few Africans in other countries or continents seemed to want to return to their"roots"in Africa,i wonder why?

//no one alive today is a victim of slavery//

LOL TTT, how naive you must be.

😞😓🥱

Enjoy your blessed life.

Feel free to ignore those that work for a pittance to supply you your fancy clothes.

You appear to have deliberatly mis represented what TTT said.

You know what he means.

curlyfries //why is it that Poland and other affected countries don't keep banging on about "reparation" from Germany.//

'In 1992, the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation was founded by the Polish and German governments, and as a result, Germany paid Polish sufferers approximately zl 4.7 billion (equivalent to zl 37.8 billion or US$7.97 billion in 2022).'

And Poland is still making demands, but war reparation is a different issue than slavery 300 years ago.

In the current war in Ukraine, if as I hope, Ukraine prevails, they should make similar claims against Putin & Russia.

No one can just say sorry for the slavery, it suggests anyone here today is responsible and anyone in a place trying to con other nations out of their resources, have a reason to be compensated. Neither is true but a thoughtless apology without cause is likely to be used against the apologiser's nation. Besides why should anyone be sorry for something that was considered normal at the time and when the nation the scammers are attempting to victimise is the very one that turned attitudes around ?

Nigel Biggar’s book, Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning(2021) is a much needed corrective to the lies and misinformation being propagated in schools all over the world. For instance, after nearly 150 years of transporting slaves across the Atlantic Ocean, the British abolished the slave trade and spent the subsequent 150 years deploying the Royal Navy to stop the slave trade across the world. Not only was this the first time a major superpower abolished the ancient practice of slavery, but it was also the first instance of an empire suppressing it beyond its borders.

//Are they demanding reparations from the Spanish, Dutch, and French, for their part in the slave trade and colonisation? How about the Arab states?//

Romans? What did the Romans ever do for us?

@08.05.So how much dosh are you prepared to cough up for your ancestors crimes ozzy?I have already stated that i have paid in 50p,i presume you will be paying in a lot more?Thousands maybe?
