To play in goal, move the goalposts.

A very roundabout way of admitting the failure to do anything about the problem really.

TBF BMI has always been rowlocks. Most international rugby players are at least obese on that scale. Body composition is a lot harder to measure but more of a guide.

Doctors stick with BMI because it's a simple measure but it's no any indication of how fat someone is.

I do worry about the saucepans though they buzz about on these lecky bikes and scooters when in my day we kept fit by cycling/walking everywhere. I fear a worse fatty epidemic is on the way. They get their execrise playing xbox these days.

Seems ridiculous to overhaul the definition to me. It indicates a valid potential issue. If doing anything why not just have different categories of obese to cover the reasons why and the risks/issues involved ?

I remember the late Cupid (Karen) sharing with us that one time in London she stood on some 'Speaking' weighing scales and it said "One at a time please."

To me if you feel combfortable in your own weight it doesn't mater. accoording to my BMI half a stone overweight.

They did introduce a "refined" BMI calculation some time ago cos they said the original was overstating the figure for taller people. Dunno which one the medics use.

I'm BMI 30.5 on the old scale / 29.5 on the new.

Anyway they say waist/hip ratio is a better measure of "fatness".

Obesity became acceptable when in order to avoid offending the overweight the notion that 'Big is Beautiful' was promoted.   It did the obese no favours.

It used to be easy to determine who was overweight/obese. We were allowed to use our eyes. Very accurate it was too.

an old friend who I hadn't seen for years started chatting to my eldest Brother thinking it was me... "Blimey you've put on weight ya fat ***"

My daughter (Doctor) refused to use BMI, but she never had any problem telling the right people they were too large.

Thsi does appear to be dividing those who need help immediately over those that need to drop weight but can do it longer term.  Providing my inderstanding is correct then I dont have a problem as the two types of Lardarse need differing approaches.  I fall in the second category at the moment, need to do something but not a medical emergency.

I read yesterday that Ozempic injections are the 'go-to' answer to the problem.

I have CKD, stage 4, and the renal specilist told me in Sep last year that the Dapagliflozin tabs i am taking has slowed the downward tracjectory down a little. However, should this continue on it's present course, i will be on dialysis in 2 to 3 years.

He recommended to my GP that, as a diabetic, i be prescribed Ozempic, in addition to the Dapagliflozin, not because of any weight concerns, but because it has been proven to be very affective in slowing down CKD.

But because there are lots and lots of wibbly-wobbly fat bellies out there - and not just celebs like James Corden - buying the drug. As a result, i have been told there is a shortage.

So, in a couple of years time, when i'm spending up to 5 hours a day, 3 times a week, on dialysis, i can thank those disgusting 'five-bellies' who cannot be bothered to get off their fat assets and do a bit of exercise.

Pretty much sums up the problem Ken.

It's called thinking outside of the box.

Levels of obesity, crime, homelessness, etc etc too high and proving difficult to solve?

Simply redefine the word.

Isn't BMI yet another case of dumbing down a complex topic ?

If the guys and gals will forego the Speedos and mini skirts I'll be content.

It's why the kaftan was invented.

My elder daughter (a 6' tall international high jumper) registered as obese on current ways of measuring!

The BMI  definition is very narrow and not really suitable for all.

You can tell the difference between looking at a tall, strapping, muscular lass and a small, dumpling girl simply by looking. Scales can't.
