@14.25.Yes and they were relinquished by the Ukrainians in a deal with Russia that Russia would never invade Ukraine in the future. How did that work out.

Untitled //Ukraine never had nuclear weapons... they were soviet weapons stationed in ukraine. //

Not true: The nukes in Ukraine were there by virtue of the fact that it was a part of the USSR, but when that collapsed in 1991 & Ukraine became an independant state, those weapons & everything else on Ukrainian soil became Ukrainian property.

Surrendering them in 1994, at a ceremony in Budapest along with Belarus and Kazakhstan, in return for security guarantees from the United States, the UK, France, China and Russia.

A crappy deal I would say.

Im not sure if there isnt a few Russian or Chinese Bots on this site Khandro?Just saying.

the nukes were never ukraine's khandro. they had zero capacity to use them. the idea that they could have kept them is fanciful.

^^ // they had zero capacity to use them. //

Have you any evidence for that ?  Who held the launch codes ?

From Hansard June 1993

"Mr. David Evans: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list those countries which possess nuclear weapons capable of being delivered to targets in the United Kingdom.

The Minister of State for the Armed Forces (Mr. Jeremy Hanley) : Such weapons are possessed by Russia, China, France and the United States. Some weapons are also possessed by Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus, but these are controlled by the Commonwealth of Indpendent States."

But at least if the Ukrainians had kept their nuclear weapons it would be a nice gambit to keep Putin away from his invasion of the Ukraine surely.

@15.35.A very crappy deal Khandro, especially for the innocent victims of Putin and his madness.

Thank you Corby

how many people in  europe would now go and fight for their country.given that most of them have been given away, to overseas invaders

Question Author

if ukraine still had its nuclear weapons they would still be controlled by russia, which controls the CIS. they would have made no difference..

@17.15.Still seems as though the Ukrainians gave away their nuclear weapons for no reason Bot.

Probably allowed it so they didn't have the responsibility  and didn't look like a nation needing taking out early come the next conflict.

He's right. The US is no longer interested in Europe as an ally or Russia as an enemy.

Europe - which includes us whether people like it or not -  will need to defend itself from here on in.
