'Chaos at Heathrow Airport can be blamed on the drive for net zero by successive governments, according to Reform UK MP Richard Tice.

Speaking on GB News, Tice said Heathrow has changed its backup electrical systems to reach green targets and the decision has now come back to bite them.

The airport will be closed all day Friday after a fire at an electrical substation near by that supplies it with power.'

Does he have a point, is greening putting lives at risk?

The point is that there seems to have been no fallback.

Surely a substation should be able to be isolated and a second one, or whatever, brought online ?

Heathrow latest LIVE: Was airport shutdown fire sabotage? Counter-terrorism police lead probe into blaze amid flights chaos

"What's that got to do with the fire? "

Well becasue the backup generators should have kicjed in instantaneously and then the airport would not have shut.

There are two issues here, one the fire and cause of it and two why Heathrow didnt have working back up.

What seems odd is that the fire was about 2km away from the airport boundary, and supplied many houses. I would guess that the substation was not the only one serving the airport.

You would hope so, indeed BAnks I have worked at have dual lines into different parts of the building plus huge battery banks and generators.  When something fails youhardly see the lights blink.

Something is not quite right and I doubt it is to do with the Russians or the Eco loons.

goes to show how vulnerable the uk is, terrorists could literally bring us to a stand still, kick to problem down the road or will deal with it when the time comes err fingers crossed.

We have always been vulnerable, just more at risk now we dont have a clue who is coming into the country by ther millions.

But I dont think thats at play here.  Just incompetancy.

youngmafbog, it's just odd no one ever thought what if so put in a few backup plans to keep the airport running, divert to x etc

I think LHR has back up for essential services such as ATC, runway lights etc but the main back up is in the same place as the substation which is on fire.  It's cooling oil that is on fire and 10% of it is still alight.

If it was sabotage, I doubt that it would have anything to do with excessive immigration. Russia can send small teams over to do the job.

From Heathrow,

"We have multiple sources of energy into Heathrow. But when a source is interrupted, we have back-up diesel generators and uninterruptable power supplies in place, and they all operated as expected.

Our back-up systems are safety systems which allow us to land aircraft and evacuate passengers safely, but they are not designed to allow us to run a full operation.

As the busiest airport in Europe, Heathrow uses as much energy as a small city, therefore it’s not possible to have backup for all of the energy we need to run our operation safely.

We are implementing a process which will allow us to redirect power to the affected areas, but this is a safety-critical process which takes time, and maintaining safety remains our priority, so we have taken the decision to close the airport for today."

That I am afraid is absolute cobblers.

The generators may not be able to run the shops and the grills etc which is why you have separate feeds from the opposite direction.  I would expect Heathrow to have at least three plus a generator.  Switching should be automatic and no one should notice and it should power everything.

Yes Fender its called a DR plan, with a BCP for the business side.  Seems theirs is to just shut down.  Poor show.

Nowadays there are lots of eggs being put in a few baskets, and this only works if everybody has some eggs in baskets. Those without eggs would be quite happy to smash some. Those who are led by people who don't care about their own or others welfare (e.g. fanatics or nutters) would also be happy to go on a a smashing spree. Huge reliance on interlinked computers and satellite communication chains has huge risks of worldwide disruption. It's a bit like the Cold War - only prevents hot war if there is mutually assured destruction.

A single deranged person with an AK47 or a vehicle or machete can only kill a few people, but a cyber attack could be far worse.

I took the dogs a walk round the local reservoir on Tuesday, git back to the car and wouldn't start. Appeared to be the battery had died, reading this I now think it was the Russians to blame.

@16.15.It could be aliens from another planet that caused your car battery to fail nether.A lot of people who have had contact with aliens while driving all report that their cars electrics were the first thing to break down.Methinks you got off lightly hun.

They were just testing their new ray gun. No doubt they'll be on the blower to Starmer to brag about their advanced weapon and suggesting he avoid using his car  for the foreseeable.

The Americans had a ray gun ... Ronald Reagan!

It could be sabotage ... Just Stop Oil? (Other saboteurs are available). Probably best to wait and see ...

@16.19 That explains a lot, My heads been full of fog ever since.

I know it cost £324 to sort out, when a battery dies the computers modules all need reprogramming. And you need to tell the computer the serial number of the new battery or it won't charge it up.

another target for just stop oil and other net0 save the planet nut jobs, how many other places like this that can be taken offline.. vulnerable britain.. yet two tier goes on about the raf flying round ukraine..little britain broken.
