'Chaos at Heathrow Airport can be blamed on the drive for net zero by successive governments, according to Reform UK MP Richard Tice.

Speaking on GB News, Tice said Heathrow has changed its backup electrical systems to reach green targets and the decision has now come back to bite them.

The airport will be closed all day Friday after a fire at an electrical substation near by that supplies it with power.'

Does he have a point, is greening putting lives at risk?

Not without evidence of what they have swapped their back up systems from too!

Madness that the country's busiest airport doesn't have a secure power supply in the event of primary failure...

It's rumoured, according to Isabel Oakeshott, of Talk, that diesel standby generators have been replaced with those that run on bio-mass.

If true, I  hope they leave hospitals, etc. alone.

sad, biomass is much much worse than diesel for emmissions. FGS it's harvested, processed and shipped using diesel before it's even used to produce more carbon to generate electricity. When will someone wake up and stop this madness?

Die hard 2 anyone?

my money's on the russians

Me too.

It's a bit daft to blame it on green at this stage. The anti-greens are out of order. Tice knows what he's doing, and people like Khandro seem to fall for mischievous propaganda and pounce on anything that fits in with their beliefs.

Two explosions were responsible for the fire.  The cause is as yet unknown.

I blame the anti Musk brigade!

A breakdown of insulation in the sub-station COULD have caused a loud bang, so not necessarily a malicious explosion.

bhg:  I haven't seen any suggestion that there was any foul play, it looks like a straightforward malfunction.

The question is why; as far as I know, nothing like this has happened before. Changing the type of fuel looks like a realistic proposal.

In what way is it a realistic proposal?

Khandro:

Alba said, "It's rumoured, according to Isabel Oakeshott, of Talk, that diesel standby generators have been replaced with those that run on bio-mass."

What's that got to do with the fire? Is it suggested that the back-up generators weren't working because they had been changed? I haven't seen any mention of that apart from Oakeshott's rumour, only that there had been a change, not that they were faulty.

On sky they just said anti terrorism police are investigating. It's the Russians I tells you!

Blimey! We're all coming up with theories! We'll have to wait and see.

// replaced with those that run on bio-mass. //

unlikely. Biomass is a solid fuel. Biodiesel or HVO, yes a possibility; but it wouldn't need the generators to be changed as a standard diesel engine will run on it (the only problem arises with high pressure delivery systems as biofuel is less dense and will find leak points faster than mineral diesel).

HVO has ethical issues, like using food-growing land to grow fuel, and how much wildlife gets displaced as a result....

yes atheist, my comments are tongue in cheek really :)

BBBC:

"Counter-terrorism officers from the Metropolitan Police are now leading the investigation into the fire because of the location of the substation and the "impact on critical national infrastructure".

It added there was currently no indication of foul play but it is keeping "an open mind".
