The conflict between Sunnis and Shias is similar to the age old conflict between Protestant and Catholics in the Christian tradition. Northern Ireland is a fine example of Christians being at odds with one another in a violent manner.

The two religious sects live without any trouble in other parts of the world, and it's is only in Iraq due to its political circumstances that there is now a serious risk of civil war breaking out.
During Saddam's distatorship days, he favoured Sunnis (who became his cronies) and was meanwhile repressing the majority of iraqis-who are Shi'ites. After, the 2003 gulf war, when he was overthrown, there was no longer any control over the two groups of people... and since then the two sides have been relentless in carrying out violent attacks against each other.

If the 'foreign' troops leave the country now, anarchy and civil war are more than likely to occur. And the point of invading Iraq was......

Well, you only have to look at Northern Ireland and see what Protestants and Catholics have done to each other over the years. Sadly religious fanatics seem to be even worse that agnostic or athiest ones.

I think the clash between the 2 sects is inevitable. The only reason it did not happen before was because Saddam, who aggravated the tension between them in the first place, also ironically, kept all the various factions/sects under control due to his dictatorship rule.

And it does remind me of the Protestant/Catholic clash in Northern Ireland. As it took time for the situation to calm down there with both parties calling for truce, I think the same will happen in Iraq. Only perhaps it may take longer.
