I never thought I'd be saying this, but recently I can't help thinking it's not only an appropriate sentence, but a necessary deterrent.
And while on the subject (someone tell me if I'm wrong), what the hell's wrong with the idea of bringing back hard labour? I know it sounds gruesome, but for some of the sick crimes we read about these days I think it's quite appropriate (and no, I don't mean it should apply to all prisoners, only those who've done particularly despicable acts). I think the victims and victims' families would sleep a little easier knowing that the perpetrator was working, and working hard and unrewarded, rather than taking university degrees and enjoying a life of comparative luxury.
Oh, and yes, if it was my daughter he'd find me waiting for him when he got out...
I think the prison cells given to these people should reflect the crime - the really sick and twisted crimes should get a pile of hay and a flea infested blanket and a 2 buckets - one for stuff that goes into them (food and water together) and one for stuff to come out of them. thats it!
lesser crimes go up and up in terms of squalor until things like non payment of parking tickets is akin what they have now.
too many prisoners expect their cells to be like the average bedsit.
they deserve to be treated like the scum they are.
