I was intrigued by the fact that the child's grandfather reported the matter to social services and then said, when interviewed, that 'They had a lot to answer for' for not taking appropriate action. Surely if he was concerned enough to report his own daughter's situation to the authorities, he could have taken action himself. What sort of a grandparent stands to one side and watches his own daughter destroying herself and his grandchild and does nothing practical to rectify the situation? Everyone these days seems hell bent on letting someone else take responsibility.
