Geordies saying "pet " banned!..................

What on earth is this world coming too, in the news today Newcastle Council have banned anyone saying " PET " because they reckon it belittling the person its been said to as an animal. What utter rubbish, I'm from the north/east and this word is a term of endearment, it has always has been and I would never be offened if someone said it to me. Its the as someone calling you "HINNY "

What do other northerners think of this ban? X X X :-)

Daft. We say 'chick' and don't interpret it as meaning a bird. In Barnsley they use 'flower' and quite clearly they are not talking to plants, but addressing a person. Obviously terms of endearment that would be evident in the tone of voice used.

Well, I haven't seen this story and you haven't provided a link, so I'm rather assuming this is some incredibly minor thing that has been blown out of all proportion, like Newcastle council issuing a memo saying that their receptionists should talk proper and not say "pet" all the time. Just guessing, but an educated guess based on the countless other stories of this nature I've heard over the years that turn out to be nothing.

I'm from London and I got a 3rd written warning (with no previous verbal warings or any written warnings) for calling someone 'sunshine'. It caused me to have a breakdown, a month off work, and even now when I think of it, it makes me feel sick!!
On the bright side, what I should have done, was go in to work, smacked th stupid old bag who said I had said it and walked out. I really wish that I had belted her one, but just thinking that I'll meet the old cow one day and whack her makes me feel better.

Hi Big Al1st, " HINNY " is another word of endearment, eg:- dear, love, darling. Have you heard the word " MARRA ", it means friend, workmate , pal.

It wasn't an insult saying Geordy, well maybe to someone like myself as I come from Durham, but living here in Hertfordshire for many years I've got used to being called a Geordy. When my husband and I go to visit my family he gets called a cockney by people he doesn't know because we live south of Peterbourgh, we have even been called "POSHIES"!........

I heard this bit of info on our local news 3 Counties Radio, also I read it in a daily paper, according to Tory Euro MP for the North East "Martin Callanan" he said " these are traditional North East terms of affection and I can't believe anyone would be offended by them! [email protected]

I learnt about PC from suffragette and not from you.
Dont be so presumptious. Nor, as a pixel, be so insulting. It is not nice nor needed. I think you also pointed out in one of your posts on my question that people who cannot argue their point in writing revert back to insulting behaviour. It was highly unnecessary of you to become so offensive towards me.

Hi Cat Woman, Thanks for answer. Had'nt heard of MARRA either.
When I lived in Gt Yarmouth we were called bloaters.
I read the article in the paper and it made want to laught, if it were'nt so serious.

The not so Liberal Undemocrats have taken over the Civic Centre and are now making sweeping changes to undermine the people's democratic rights and seem heel bent on making money by selling off swathes of the city to speculators. Bits of park are being nibbled under our noses, and chunks of previously zoned leisure buildings are to be compulsorily purchased at knock down prices, flattened and the land made available to their fat cat big business friends.

HINNY as a Geordie term of endearment is derived from the name of the result of crossing a horse withe a female donkey. The Hinnie, rarer than a Mule, is more intelligent than a horse and more co-operative than a donkey. They are endearing and lovable creatures. The term is applied to loved ones and children.
