It wasnt safe to be white and british in Germany between 1914-1917 or 1939-1945. Neither in Buenos Aires in 1982 or in Baghdad from 1990 onwards, or in Afgahnistan from 2001 onwards. I'm sure a few Irish people felt uncomfortable at times over here from the late 1960s onwards - The Guildford 4, Birmingham 6 and so on. These things happens, if anyone hasnt noticed the western world and Islamic world havent been getting on too well as of late and this follows the pattern as outlayed above.
What if society at large giving in to fear is precisely what drives people to behave in a desparate way? It is acknowleged across the political spectrum and across the world that Blair and Bush's actions in the aftermath of 9/11 has made the world less safe and has driven more people to give up discourse and use violent means.
It is really better to give into paranoia and start acting scared, particularly when the chances of dying are so infitessimally small?
When did you last get in a car? Did you think about the danger of doing that? In the last year for which there are figures, 2004, 3,221 people were killed in road accidents, 31,130 were seriously injured and 246,489 were slightly injured.
According to an article by Lionel Shriver in today's Grauniad, in total the number of people who died in terrorist attacks in the past five years is 2,752 in the USA - all from 9/11 back in 2001. In the UK, it's 52 all from 7/7 in 2005.
For 2004, in both countries? Zero.
In 2003 and 2002 worldwide there were respecively 625 and 725 people were killed by terrorism. None were in the UK or US.
The people currently in court on charges of threatening to blow up a plane had been infiltrated months ago. The changes of them getting on a plane and blowing it up were precisely zero. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
No one is saying there aren't terrorists. They are pointing that if we act scared, being paranoid and behaving irrationally we're doing their job for them and we're probably going to drive more people to terrorism into the bargain.

What is acknowledged across the world and the political spectrum is that Islamic terrorists have made the world less safe. Bush/Blair's actions after 9/11 were in response to this extreme provocation after years of Islamic terrorist attacks.
Furthermore, when I get into my car, I don't expect some suicidal lunatic to deliberately crash into me as punishment for not worshipping their god. Accidents in life I can accept but indiscriminate slaughter by religious maniacs has to be resisted.
It is our watchfulness that will keep these murderers of our planes

I used to be proud to be British but unfortunately everyday this is being eroded away, pretty soon i will be ashamed to call myself British. Every time i read a post by devilwoman or Ward~minter my heart sinks. I think these people would be better suited to life in apartheid South Africa rather than the multi cultural society that we live in. If they knew anything about British history they would realise that the this country was founded on invasion and migration i'm pretty sure ward~minters blood is as pure as he thinks!
Instead of wanting to deport these British citizens, or even worse wanting to send them to hell, perhaps we should be asking ourselves why British citizens would want to do this to other British citizens. The only real answer is British foreign policy.
British muslims as a whole are probably the most civilised people left in this country, with a strong sense of family and decency, whilst people like ward~minter barricade themselves in their houses reading articles from the hate filled Daily mail, breeding binge drinking hoodie kids, spouting rascist drivel and longing for the return of the British empire.
I would like to hear ward~minters opinions as to what Britishness is, i'm guessing tolerance isn't on his list!

Ignoring the fact that you have a blinkered view of reality if you honestly think that Islamic terrorism popped into the world appropo of nothing at all and that the Islamic world has no reason - whether one agrees with them or not - for being annoyed at the West, I agree with what you say about watchfulness.
Indeed I made a point of mentioning how that meant the current plot had never stood a chance of coming off precisely because of watchfulness. This is not the same thing as being a delusional paranoid and getting your pants in a twist.
You know, it's ironic that the very people who decry how our way of life is being attacked are the first ones to roll over and start doing exactly what the terrorists want, isn't it?

'and let's tell that to all the people who have had family killed in that way' you could start tommorrow devil woman and never finish it in your lifetime. waldo seems to be the only one truly 'getting it' here. http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

Drunkle-Tron I would have agreed with you 15 year ago, in fact I am currently doing my best to not hate my indian & Pakistani origanated Muslim British neighbours. But alas, I totally disagree with your comment that these are probably the most civalised people left in this country! Have a word please, either you are not trying to live the life of a normal hardworking 2 parent 3 child family, bringing them up to believe that we are all equal, or you are, and you are niave. I have been naive for many years, tolerant, some may call it, unpredijuce is what I thought. I hide my true feelings from my chldren about our community, it's not all about articles on the tele, I live everyday in a town where British asians disrespect our social rules, never with anything but positive consequences.I have many personal experiences, that sadly have brought me to this conclusion. Despite feeling angry, I still do my utmost to make these people feel respected, but that will stop, and I am a tolerant person. I feel ashamed, but liberated for posting this.
reading through this, here's the thing I just don't get. How, why, for what reason can/do people claim to be "proud to be British"???? I have pride in things I have achieved, things I have accomplished in my life, but I can't feel proud of something that is purely an accident of birth! How can you be proud of a country that you didn't help to shape? how can you be proud to be from a country just cos it's where your parents happened to live when you were born? I never have understood this concept. I'm Scottish, I love Scotland, but I would never say I'm "proud to be Scottish" as that just seems entirely illogical. I know it's off topic, but can any of you proud folk explain this to me please???

When you say "would never even think of going of to war and fighting against my country would you? these youmg men who hate us and hate the country that gave them birth should be deported" are you talking about the two blokes who were escorted off the Monarch flight, or another story?
Just don't want to mis-understand the thread of these posts.
