People aren't normally born bad. They get that way due to a thousand and one influences during their life. You will not be the same person today as you were when you were growing up. I'm not saying that everyone from an underprivileged or abusive background is going to grow up with criminal tendencies - most people have an inbuilt sense of self-worth and will want to 'better' themselves in any way they can, even if their surorunding influences are desperate. However, malign influences do lead some people to do evil, stupid, dangerous and reckless things, because they know no better and lack the wit, basic decency or education to improve themselves. I don't agree that prison should be a soft option with automatic privileges, but I do think that treating people with a degree of respect and educating them in the normal behaviours of a civilised society might make them less likely to offend, if and when they are released, and I'm NOTtalking about those people who committ capital crimes, who are a different matter altogether. If you've never been taught these things, how can you be expected to know? Suppose I'd better sit back now and wait for the brickbats to arrive from the Red Top readers..............................
