I feel deeply saddened by this news today. He was a good person, he loved animals, that others find hard to love, with a passion. He had an amazing zest for life and love for his family. My heart goes out to Terri and his babies. He will leave an empty space that is hard to fill. Rest in Peace Steve x

I think he was a hugely charismatic person dedicated to his love of animals and to their care and conservation. His enthusiasm was infectious and made us watch & learn.
I am sorry I never met him. There must be such a empty space back at Australia Zoo to overcome but I feel sure his family and collegues will continue the work inspired by him.
To Terri, Bindy and Bob, thank you for letting us share your lovely Hubby and Dad and our condolences and sympathy. As for RIP, Crikey! I am sure he would NEVER want peace or rest. Must be some crocs up there. G'day Steve

sorry to see that a person had to die unnecessarily. He was after all afther and a family man. However i was totally turned off by his melodramatic over acting in what were sometimes clearly staged -for -TV situations. He made a mountain out of every molehill he climbed. His stunts of feeding crocodiles with his baby child in his arms was irresponsible...he was a cheap showman and he paid the ultimate price for his stupidity.

he didn't die because of stupidity but because of a freak accident, like Jeremy Clarkson being run over by a bicycle.

I agree its a sad loss. He was an exceptional bloke. But personally i think it was a fitting end. He died doing what he loved, being with wildlife and i think we can all find some comfort in that.

Hi guys, I was really sad this morning too. He's going to leave such a massive gap in the lives of his family and friends.

Having had friends die in apparently 'freak' accidents, I have a belief that no true accident is the cause of one thing. It is always a process of events. 'Maybe' that stingray had been attacked by something recently and was on guard, 'maybe' steve didn't know as much about the animal as some of the reptiles he studies, 'maybe' he turned the wrong way at the wrong time. I don't think this was inevitable per se, but I do think it was a horrible thing to happen, and I think that guy had so much more left to give. I really hope the press don't start trying to find someone to blame.

But it has happened, and I hope his work continues, and his family find a way of surviving it. It really has made me sad. :o(

Very sad that such a charismatic character suffered a tragic death in a one in a million chance incident, but over the years he had been pushing his luck to the limit.
Who can forget his escapade with his baby and the crocodile? Shades of Michael Jackson for sheer stupidity in that instance.
Excellent at his job however, and a great entertainer......he will be missed. RIP.

Well, when i heard about steve this morning, i was totally shocked..and still am. no-one will ever replace him, thats for sure. he was a funny, crazy guy, but, was devoted to his work. The world will miss him.....My thoughts are with his family.

How ironic that he was killed by a stingray who are relatively non attacking animals (i saw loadsa in oz, ALTHOUGH I STAYED WELL AWAY!) as opposed to a deadly croc!

Its a massive loss, really feel for his wife and 2 young kids but he did die doing what he does best as he would say crocs rule!!

People go on about the incident with his son and the crocodile but if you look at some of the old documentaries where families live in the jungle or with lions or gorillas or elephant orphanages, the kids always ran about with them. They were introduced to the animals at a very young age and being brought up with them by knowledgable parents, learned, respected and knew how to behave. I felt Steve knew exactly what he could and could not do with the crocs and was demonstrating his belief and respect.
Having said that , would I do it with my child? Of course not because I don't have his knowledge and background, and I suspect neither do his critics.

This ranks with the death of the snake-man OK herpetologist who specialised in Kraits - very venomous snakes - whose last words were ....Oh God it's a Krait !

I don't like to learn about anyone who meets an untimely death and I am sorry for his family but Steve Irwin was a nauseating loud-mouthed aussie. The animals in his care all hated him. He was forever antagonising them just to put on a show. He should have never been permitted to be in charge of a hamster, let alone alligators, and other dangerous animals � many of which are endangered.

The only reason the govt put up with him is because the zoo bought plenty of money into Australia. If anybody else annoyed wild animals so they show aggression just for the camera they would be put in jail. It was only a matter of time before one of them got him and the fact that it was an overgrown flounder that got him in the end is certainly is an indication of how far he pushed the boundaries.
