Loosehead - you have a point about not wanting to limit cars for loss of revenue. It's the same with London congestion charging. There is no reason why people could't have an account which is debited when you visit the zone, but they would rather people forget or don't realise - then they get the fines which are big � in comparison.
juddlinski, many speed limits are unrealistic and impossible to stick to in reality.
I was driving out of Reading (A33) and it is 40 for a few miles. Open, centrally-reserved dual carraigeway. I don't want to risk my licence and was doing around 45. Everyone else was doing 50+, many 60+. I don't consider them to be driving dangerously or to be of any risk to me. I was keeping my speed down to avoid the headache of playing the camera-lookout game, not because I or anyone else deemed it an appropriate speed.
Brionon, dizzieblond has a very good point wrt driver distractions. If you want to avoid accidents I suggest you start a campaign to improve driver standards.
There are many cameras in good locations, such as near small junctions on dual carriagways where you should be slowing down a bit and become aware of potential hazards, but the reality is that most drivers will slow for the camera and pay no attention to the junction. A good driver will notice the junction and act accordingly without the need to have the restriction imposed.
